After reading the Navy posts about SMU being a bad place to coach b/c of lack of spirit, listening to all kinds of fans who say only a total idiot would come to SMU because it's a dead end job, the only pitch Orsini can make, besides a lot of cash that can be matched, is basically the same pitch Steve Jobs made to John Sculley about joining Apple from Pepsi.
If Paul Johnson or any other candidate with other options wants a halfway easy job where they don't want to market the school, be a politician, an incredible recruiter, great game day coach, etc, you don't go to SMU. You only take SMU if you want to try something that would shock the world like proving all the detractors wrong and turning SMU into a top 25 program - that's changing the football world and that's Orsini thinks he can get a great coach. That's Orsini's pitch, we'll see who bites...
Apple Steve Jobs to then Pepsi executive John Sculley: "Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to change the world?"

Are you comparing SMU to Apple Computer? The SMU coaching job is about about money, money, and money. If a BSC school and SMU are offering the same amount of money, then the coach will most likley choose the BSC school for obvious reasons. I said from the get-go that SMU would probably have to 'over pay' to get the coach they want. Remember, SMU dug this hole they are in and now SMU is paying for it. Pretty embarressing that SMU does not have a coach yet despite the fact they were the first Div. 1-A school to fire their coach. Who has more strike-outs...Orsini or Babe Ruth?

What does we were the first one on the market have to do with anything? Just because we're first doesn't mean we should necessarily be the first filled, especially when you have jobs being filled less than a weekend after they are officially open. There are 14 jobs that have opened up thus far, only 3 have been filled. Two of those were filled within 48 hours in some under the table conversations. Chill out.

actually the SMU job is probably a really good job for 2 different profiles. I would think a young "up and coming" head coach, like a Turner Gill or someone that may be at I-AA right now, would love to have this opportunity. 1st, it would represent a huge pay raise and if they can turn this thing around, a pringboard to the bigtime.
The other type is the Terry Bowden type...out of coaching for some tie but wanting to get back in...and prove he is worthy of coaching "big boy" football again. If Bennett had been able to follow last year's 6-6 with an 8-4 season and bowl bid, he might be headed to College Station right now.
I think Orsini will ultimately have to "settle" for someone from one of these two molds...and I suspect there are several good candidates. Don't think you have to "settle" for an unproven coordinator

You don't take either job if you want safe. You take either job if you think you're a bad arss and can do what no one else thinks you can do. It's not all about the money. Lots of schools can and will match what we match (Navy won't hesitate to move up $500k if that will keep Johnson), quality of life is important and no one who just wants to be safe but change the scenery will take the SMU job.

Who with any really knowledge can say he has struck out even once? Several weeks ago he announced it would be at or near the end of the season as the ones he was talking to were still coaching. PJ was the rumor from the beginning and his season ended, oh lets se.....24 hours ago. Kraigthorpe was a just rumor - nothing more. The Nutt rumor was crazy from the beggining. In my view - we have probably made our first offer this weekend.
Its like you folks have never been around a high level executive move - they take some time, unless it was orchestrated from the begining (A&M).
Orsini has one shot at this and he has the bucks to make a difference. If he misses, its five years to fix it - therefore we REALLY can't afford a miss. If he wants to take a couple of weeks to get it right, I hope he does - even if it does make a few no-nothing immature board posters anxious.

Anyone who says Steve-O has "struck out" is just a knee-jerk reactionary who wanted an early hire. Steve-O supposedly has had his heart set on one guy from the start, and we have no reason to believe that guy isn't still out there. He does his due dilligence when he reaches out to multiple candidates (or their representatives), but that doesn't mean Krag or Johnson or someone else is Steve-O's first choice. I don't know who his head coach is, and neither does anyone else on here.

When do you think Orsini will let Urban Meyer come down from his attic? Man probably needs a pee break.

If Houston Nutt and several other coaches were not contacted either directly or indirectly about the SMU job then why do we have a search firm? If Orsini has had 'his guy' from the start then why is he not hired already? and why do we have a search firm? I guarantee that SMU has made overtures to several big names and for reasons unknown (money, history of program, current model, etc.) have said thanks but no thanks.
