so that it is not construed as sour grapes later. God forbid, what if Paul Johnson is hired here and does not succeed? What if a widely accepted X&O, football genius can't get SMU to a bowl game or any sustained success like Navy has...then what? Better give him all the tools he needs and not count on raw genius to overcome our 'issues'.

I'm glad you went on record, but that really goes without saying.

With all due respect, this could be said for anyone we bring in. It's a crap shoot. There's no guarantee anyone can do anything with the flaming bag of dookie that is SMU Football.

might be obvious to some, but I think everybody views this issue differently. SMU has no room left blame it on the "dumb coach" and better get this right. Johnsons reputation seals the edict more than any other coach we could hire. by far.

Steve Orsini has raised well over ten million dollars to hire a coach and knows how important this hire is to SMU but also to his career. He is also one of the best ADs in the nation. He will get it done. I know this much, Johnson would have at least gone 7-5 with our 2006 team

I imagine PJ can figure out a way to get across the goal line from the 1 yard line.

Hoops,
Orsini sure hasn't made you very happy, first Doherty and now Paul Johnson (if it happens). He will have now made his bed at SMU with these 2 hires.

When recruits start to see him as a coaching legend here, I think you people will be shocked not only how well he does win/loss wise, but how well he recruits.....This is no BS like we heard about some of our past coaches. PJ has a record that speaks for itself.

Here's something to make you feel better hooper. I mentioned it once but I will again. The new provost is a fan of athletics. This is huge. Within the next few months, a meeting will convene between he and a committee with recommendations regarding the establishment of several new majors that are viewed as "friendly" to athletes. This meeting is blessed already. So, hopefully we are going to have a really good coach be it PJ or someone else who can now offer recruits something we can't now. Ok, feel better?

havent we heard this before? As for borrowing trouble, thats funny, SMU sure hasn't given us any heartbreak and misery. I must be imagining it all. And lest you think I don't want PJ or whomever else to be successful, I am running out of time to take my kids to an SMU bowl game. Before long they won't interested. My son is already asking if we can go to Illinois bowl games (i grew up there).
