We are going to wind up with a nondescript coordinator.

That is, if things stay the way they've always been for SMU. Why should we bait ourselves into thinking otherwise? I don't know that many of us will know how to conduct ourselves should a target be named, and we actually achieve it. And I'm not just talking coaching searches. Hell, just 5 months ago our newly created sales/marketing team had a goal of 5,000 season tickets sold...and it didn't happen.

This being said, I believe I'm going to have to see jtstang's "no expectations" theory, and raise him to "expect the thing to blow up in our face with the usually undesirable outcome." This way, if/when by some miracle we get what we want...Johnson, Neuheisel, Gil, hell Franchione...we can be pleasantly surprised.

You don't raise $10 million to hire a college coordinator...Follow the money.

100% correct. And you similarly don't hire the marketing guy away from SWA for him to go back to SWA less than a year later, with nary an increase in season ticket sales. But that's how it goes for us.

Hope in the end we're pleasantly surprised.

Which brings to mind one of Darth's hypothesis...

"When it comes to SMU Football -- what can go wrong, will go wrong!"

We haven't had a product to sell. If we get a good coach and start winning, our situation will change. The negative attitude we have had is a huge part of our problem also. Thank goodness for the guys that put up the money and their vision of getting this program turned around. Now we need a head coach with the confidence he can pull it off.
