IDK I just think that in and of itself is a testament to the notion that we're done swimming in the kiddy pool. Kudos to all involved in this process.

What he said.
I don't think we'll get PJ, and in the end I doubt we out-bid Tech (and maybe not even Navy), but the fact that we're in the same financial stratosphere is extremely encouraging. You can bet that if PJ falls through, there are other coaches out there taking notice of the dollars being mentioned here, and we might be entertaining a higher caliber of coach than we were before.

Exactly, the fact we are even trying to compete for a coach with other successful football programs tells me SMU wants to win again. I am very impressed that we are aiming high in our coaching search and I have been very pleased with all of the rumored names mentioned for the SMU job to date. It appears all of the coaches we have rumored to be targeting all have name recognition with past success. Even if we miss on PJ, I am enthusiastic in SMU's efforts and excited about the future of SMU football. Pony Up!

I heard Stallion was donating the proceeds of his upcoming book, "The Stallion Model: How A College Athletic Program Should Be Run", to help cover whatever further funds we need to hire a coach.

Here's the word from the GT board at the moment (don't know if it's true, but one poster said he got it from a board member):
GT offered PJ $1.8 million yesterday. It was $1.5 mil in guaranteed compensation, and another $0.3 mil in incentives.
That fits in with the previous rumors that the package they counter-offered us with would be highly incentive based, and probably would still be lower than our bid--especially if we are willing to go higher than our original offer, as was rumored. We definitely have the money to do so.

we don't have the money. unless you wrote a check in the last 12 hours for $1MM.

So, yes we do have the money and don't need a check just a commitment.

I think we do have the money. If the reports are true that we came up with 10-12 mil, that is on top of what the Athletic Department was already paying Bennet--over 500 K. So, a five-year contract could easily be 2.5 mil guaranteed with the other 2 mil left for assistants and incentive packages.

I'm sure PJ has someone else do his taxes, but I hope someone reminds him of Georgia's 6% income tax:

what about the buyout for bennett? you're not leaving enough room in there for assistants/coordinators - $400,000 for assistants isn't enough. and the Athletic Dept wasn't footing the bill for Bennett either. the majority of that salary came from donors as well.
you ususally have good insight here, but i will tell you that I know (not think) we don't have the money to pay $2.2-$2.5.

This was my question yesterday...this board is throwing around a $2-$2.5MM salary like it's pocket change. First, SMU was going to be willing to pay $1MM, then it was $1.5MM, now it's $2MM+???? I think it's great for the fans that SMU is willing to step up financially but there is a ceiling at some point.
