Alabama was in the Same Situation last year as SMU is Now

Postby gambino87 » Thu Dec 06, 2007 5:23 pm

Last year Alabama got snubbed by Rich Rodriguez and the only way they could save face was to go bigger then Rodriguez…………thus, Nick Saban came to town. I think if Johnson does indeed tell us “no thanksâ€

I would hope that if it is possible for us to land someone on a tier up we would be going after that person, the "best coach available".

i like both marty and mike. their names have been mentioned by the staff to me, so either of those hires is a possibility.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Neither Marty nor Mike are "superstars."

Marty is as Superstar as you get. There is no person is the free world who doesn't know who Marty is. Mike's superstar status is debatable, but his last name isn’t.

Nope, do not agree. The names mentioned in your post are better than our previous coaching options. Remember, SMU has sucked for 20 years. We won 1 game last year and won no games a few years prior. To even have the names of some of the coaches mentioned as possiblities for the SMU job is a big upgrade. It is not the end of the world if PJ turns SMU down. There are several other coaches out there that are highly qualified and would be a big upgrade over what we have had. Look at all the coaches who have said no to Arkansas lately.....welcome to a big time coaching search. Stay tuned, Orsini will not disappoint you.

I wouldn't have a problem with Mike Shula, especially considering the fact that he is fairly young, so long as he brings in assistants who know the area and can recruit. Marty may be a wow hire, but at his age, there are definitely risks, and a background check is going to show some potential issues as well.

Mike Shula is a terrible in game coach. The only reason those Alabama teams had any success at all was defense. His specialty was supposed to be offense but it never showed.

This situation is not Alabama - they put together $35 million to hire a coach.

Can we please quit with the background check bs. No one is clean out there. I thought the "Methodist" part in SMU stood for ideas such as forgiveness. Sorry, people mistakes.

There is forgiveness and there is stupidity. If you let someone borrow your car and they steal it, do you forgive them and let them borrow it again?

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice same on me.

Just saying!

(Besides, in the words of Tom Osborne, "the head coach is responsible for the entire team. That includes the defense, the kicking team, and everything." Bill Callahan had zero to do with the defense at Nebraska, he let his buddy run it for him, and that's why he got fired!)

Um, Shula was quoted multiple times in the paper in Tuscaloosa saying that he didn't even look at the defensive game plan. As someone who saw his coaching up close, I would be very disappointed if SMU hired him.
