So who is actually interested in the SMU job?

any head coaches out there interested?

Is Neuheisel the only one who has actually been quoted as having any interest? Barnett? Bowden?

Do we really have any evidence that anyone is truly interested?

Might be close to dipping into that Coordinator pool once again.

It is my understanding--and I could be wrong--those three candidates all put their names out publicly regarding the SMU job because they want to get back in to coaching (or coaching college ball for Slick Rick).

We did not contact Barnett at all. (He contacted the search firm himself.)

Slick Rick says the search firm contacted, but the school did not.

I have heard no word out of Bowden, but there is no way he is in according to the administration.

Look at Turner's comments about the list of candidates with problems--we will only crawl back to one of them if we can't get someone on the no problems list.

Oh, woe is us! We are in a bidding war over a former NCAA coach of the year with at least one BCS school.

Who will we ever get to take this awful, awful job? Part III.

If the "bidding war" is with Ga Tech, this game is over. If their offer is even close to SMU's, pretty much a no-brainer as to which school is more committed to winning and which school actually has the opportunity to compete for a national championship.

I'm sure there are plenty of very capable coaches who would be interested in this job. At some point, though...it might be time to concede we are not going to be looking at a "WOW" hire. I think everyone underestimated the cost of competing these days.

Unless of course, SMU has $$$ committed beyond increasing the coaches' salaries budget by $2mil/yr for only 5 years. Once in this game, it won't get any cheaper.

This is looking like the Yankees and Red Sux going at it for free agents.

On Monday I called 104.5 the Zone in Nashville when Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt was the guest and asked if he would convince Norm Chow to leave the Titans and take the job at SMU. They had a nice chuckle.

Arkansas hasn't filled their head coach position, takes time when you try and get someone who is proven worthy and qualified, especially if your school is not worthy and qualified. Orsini will do his job.

I've heard Bowden is interested in SMU. That's from a close source.

Just remember the BEST Coach might be the last choice-happens all the time-I listed about 10 Coaches the other day in Texas or the Big 12 who were coordinators. Heck there are plenty of great potential coaches who are getting overlooked. Its not Knute Rockne or bust if the program is strong

Stoops
Leach
Mangino
Fran(NM) then Patterson
Miles at Okla St
Gill
Briles
Todd Graham
Peterson
Snyder at K-State
Barry Switzer at OU
Jimmie Johnson at Okla St.

then you got your Division 1-AA guys who moved up like

Grobe
Ohio St Coach
Missouri Coach
PAUL JOHNSON

It goes on and on. Plenty of great young Coaches-got to find the one with the right qualities.

Pete Carroll was far from SC's first choice. I remember the Trojans got spurned by Mike Bellotti and Dennis Erickson among others before settling for Carroll. The alumni were none too pleased, but the rest is history!

I'm not worried about getting spurned, but I am concerned about letting this recruiting season pass us by. We are not the type of program that can recover from passing up on recruiting altogether for a season.
