Does SMU=Tom Hicks?

Blaspehmy, I know. But hear me out. We've all assumed (and Steve O's likely assumed) that by announcing to the football world we're willing to pay 2M a year, we're back on the map, we mean business, etc. What if that's not the case, but rather SMU's efforts while not landing us a WOW will instead artificially raise the salaries of coaches to an outrageous level? This is what most baseball owners accused the Rangers of with A-Rod's negotiations.

I can hear it now from a coach's agent: "What's that? Michigan is prepared to offer 2M? Don't waste my time. This is 2007. S M f'in U is paying coaches 2M these days...don't call me back with a number less than 4M"

Meanwhile, we overpay for Mr. Nondescript Coordinator.

Yeah, I'm actually a bit concerned about that...the overpaying for a coordinator-type now that the word is out that we're willing to pay to attract decency. Surely, though, we're not going to pay $1.5 Million for some no-name. I think you ultimately you will see our numbers get out of the stratosphere if we don't land Johnson and some 3rd-tier scrub is on the line.

Perhaps a better analogy is when the Houston Astros went after Beltran, who had no intention of staying in Houston, but allowed their bidding to drive up his salary with the Mets. Feels eerily similar.

so we should have offered Coach Johnson less than he
was making at Navy so there would be no interest from him?

how would you have proposed getting his
attention without the increase in pay?

Offering that and getting him is one thing. Offering him and winding up paying 1.2M to last year's HC from Tarleton State is another.

I'll retract the thread if we get him.

Offering that and getting him is one thing.

Well sure it is but I still don't get what you would do?

You have to offer to even get a response.

So are you saying you would not have made an
offer that would peak his interest and be a pay raise?

I think we all agree SMU is not one of the most sought after
jobs in the country, so isn't offering big money one of our
key tools?

It seems the Mob Moss just can't win with you guys,
if we were offering 900K ...everybody would be on here
saying "ah thats chump change these days".....but when we
try to go big league it's "oh man we are over-paying and/or
causing saluries to sky-rocket".

Offering him and winding up paying 1.2M to last year's
HC from Tarleton State is another.

Come on RGV...the doom & gloom isn't that bad is it?
Tarleton State?...LOL

Probably more along the lines of Texas A&M, or a
former head coach at Alabama, Colorado/Washington....
a long way from Tarleton State!

If PJ says no I am confident Orsini has done his
homework and has another good choice. Orsini
is not some dummy that did not consider that
he may not get his top choice.

So Orsini is not seeking counsel from Copeland?

Wait a second. I don't think anyone is faulting Orsini or SMU for offering a high salary to attract PJ. All we are saying is that if we don't get him, the fallout could come back to bite us. To me, it is a necessary evil, but there is some risk.
