PJ is shopping our deal. When people shop deals they do it because they don't really want to work for you bu they want your package - someplace else. If he really wanted the job and the deal, he would have taken it already. The best hope now is to create pressure and get him to move one way or the other. The pressure is created by going public with talks with other highly respected candidates (RN, TB, etc.)

PJ either gets in the boat with us or he doesn't, but at least we know and we quite wasting time. The longer we wait, the less liely it is that he comes our way on his own.

We are missing an integral ingredient to a successful negotiation: leverage. People are not clamoring for this job so we can't afford to push PJ esepcailly this year when there are so many openings. If we aren't careful we are going to end up with the coach that noone else wants - whoever that is at the end of this process.

You are correct, leverage is key, and while I don't disagree that ours is weak at best, $2 million is a fair amount of leverage in and of itself.And if it is truly the highest offer on the table, than it speaks volumes about where PJ's head is.

Regardless, we need walk tall and be proud. For $2 mil there are other very good coaches who would look hard and seriiously at the opportunity. Hopefully Steve O is moving on other fronts and we aren't going to be left standing around holding our Johnson when then thing goes the other way.

Is it safe to say an ultimatum is out of the question. Maybe tell him we need an answer by a certain date( today) and time (noon) or we will have to pursue other options and the offer is off the table?

Maybe we should save face and take the offer off of the table...I do not want to look like Baylor w/ Mike Singeltary or Michigan w/ Les Miles. As much as I want PJ, if he isn't coming we need to move fast and hire the Plan B ASAP.

I think there are two ways to look at it. If we let it be known there is a deadline and we have the best offer on the table, we can smoke the others out. If they are going to offer more they will have to do it by a date certain. If they aren't going to offer more, he will have to decide if he wants to take our offer or take less or stay put. I think my real concern with this option is that if we are offering around $2, and he already has an offer of $1.5 in his pocket from Navy, the difference might not be enough to put pressure on him and he might just give us the finger. I think we are underrating the situation that he has at Navy. He makes $1.5 already there, and he is a GOD. That CIC trophy is all the Mids care about and as long as he keeps winning that he can stay indefinitely. The only reason to leave there, other than money, is to with a NC and he can't do that here.

If we start looking at other candidates while the offer is still on the table, it might put some pressure on him. Especially if we can get other reputable names in the mix. The problem is this will only work if he wants the job and that does not really appear to be the case. Bottom line, I think our lack of leverage is killing us and if we really want PJ we just have to wait him out.

It was said earlier in the week that one rule of sales is that time kills all deals.

While that's true, another key rule in sales is always assume you are in it until you are told you are not in it. For all you know, the silence could be attributed to something you don't know about. But you keep in contact even with a voice mail or message or something until you force a decision.

Johnson's slow-play act may be wearing thin with a lot of people but since we haven't been informed of his intentions, then we stay on him.

Who said we aren't looking at other candidates while the Johnson offer is n the table? Just because we don't know about it doesn't mean it's not happening. You have no idea what Johnson wants he's talked to GT and Duke again the last few days. Can the man get some time to ponder a life altering decision?

Now don't get me wrong, if he's not interested, dump the deal and move on, but no one knows what is going on. All of this mindless speculation, over-analyzing the situation, and jumping to conclusions is maddening.
