In my mind "No Past" means not only legal but perceptual. That also means Fran. They would not hire Erickson from ASU even if they could. He only makes $ 1.5 m. Only?? So the R.N. thing is over. Maybe Bowden/maybe not.

But doesn't Fran has his own past now with the Newsletters?

RN was cleared of any wrong doing and actually won a court settlement. I don't think you can say he has a "past". Then again we did fire Tubbs over hamburgers so who knows.

I think those statements by Turner (i) have been overblown to some extent; and (ii) were made out of a certain arrogance about what he expected to transpire.

First, he knew Orsini's most high-profile hire when he hired him. As to teh second, I don't think he expected to get into and lose a bidding war with Georgia Tech. Now things are different.

RN had an entire season forfeited at Colorado for playing an ineligible player. That, plus the investigation at UW--cleared of wrongdoing or not--does qualify as a past. NCAA violations at one school plus an NCAA investigation at another is not a good sign for RN.

Barnett, on the other hand, was cleared of wrongdoing. The University of Colorado administration as a whole was held responsible for the lack of oversight (although I'm sure that does not bode well for Gary either.)

Perception is a big deal/deal breaker. Perception is the WOW hire. One of the reasons that PJ was even considered, in my opinion is that he is clean. USNA. I am not saying that R.N. Barnett, Fran. or anyone else are bad people. They all have a "past". So forget those 3. won't happen. Is it better to hire a lesser coach with no past or a proven winner for more $. SMU is serious about this. I think they move to the next level. Marty Sh.(sp) Mariucci etc. My gut tells me SMU moves higher.

We're gonna have to take a shot at somebody with some dings in their record if we are going to want any WOW hire to coach in a non-BCS league. I'd say most of these guys would take the Duke job over SMU because they are all arrogant and think they are going to be the one to turn the team around and take it to the National Championship....oops, wait, can't do that at SMU now can we.

It got UTEP Mike Price, with a long track record at Wash State

Look where those teams have been ranked in the Con USA standings the last couple of years.

As I said in another post, Hire G. Barnett and keep him on a short leash until he proves the Colorado thing was a fluke flamed by the media.
