I know that quote well, but I learned it a little different:

"Upon the plains of hesitation lie the blackened bones of countless millions who upon the dawn of victory sat down to rest and there, resting, they died."

Mustang91, not sure where it came from, but an old coach of mine had it printed up on team shirts one year.

Though, I am not sure how the bones would get blackened. The bleached bones I get - you know when the sun beating down and all. Maybe there was a fire in there somwhere too.
