If it was a bowl championship division coach, why are we playing our trump card now? Orsini is trumped out. SMU will not get a bowl championship coach, or a bowl coach period. We went after who we wanted and we lost. We better hope Chan, or Fran will come. Maybe UH will not hire Haywood and we can ger him off the rebound.

I'm just wondering because several posters quoted Orsini as personally making that claim. It dumbfounded and perplexed the masses as to who the hell he was talking about-smoke screen?

I really do think it was Kragthorpe and Johnson. I am not sure either would have been worth the investment. Like I have said I still like: Barnett, Bowden, Fran, Dodge, Neuheisel, and someone else I can't think of right now. OF those Barnett, Neuheisel and Dodge are apparently out. I just don't see the logic in spending absurd amounts of money on a coach just because you can. It only helps tie you down that much longer if the relationship doesn't work out. For my money I would hire any of the above. Graham would be great, but I don't see him moving for a third consecutive year. Taking into account that Orsini has dropped the ball and we are now very late in the recruiting game the most logical move at this juncture seems to be Fran.

I don't think that the candidates that are interested in SMU (Fran, Barnett, Neuheisel, Bowden, even Dodge) can play that game. They will have to settle for a generous offer from SMU and be on their best behavior. That is not to say we should low ball anyone. However, everyone needs to be realistic. That includes SMU and the coaching candidates.

That includes SMU and the coaching candidates.

They will get what the market says they are worth.

The market for Paul Johnson was hot. He got paid accordingly.

We should have never detailed (if we did) how much we had to offer, not us. Nobody has come running to accept the position, and now the coaches that may be interested will ask for 1.5m plus over 3-5 years. I agree PB was paid too much. That is our fault for offering it. We have wasted more money over the last 20 years than any school in the history of college football.

Our hand is not as obvious as Barnett, Neuheisel's, Dodge's, etc. It is public record that Dodge makes around 300k, 500k would be a sizeable increase for him. The beauty of a Barnett is that despite his results meriting a PJ type of contract, his past transgressions say that he will not get a sniff for even 250k. Offer him 500k and I am sure he would accept. I don't think money is his concern at this juncture. Maybe it will take a PJ type of contract to retain him once we are back to back to back conference champions, but not right now.

I think it was Nutt. I have said over and over that he would not come to SMU but I do believe his people talked to our people in order for him to boost his exposure and price tag. I think he used us more than Johnson did.

The beauty of taking a coach like that is even if we offered them $1 to $1.5 (just to make a statement about our seriousness about improving) is that we can use the rest of the money raised to hire the best assistants we can find, and they might actually come to coach under a Barnett or Bowden--especially with some $ involved.

The other benefit is that with the lower contract, we can add in extension options in the contract to go up to the $2-$2.5 range if they are successful, and could possibly have the money to ward off some of the lower level BCS schools that might try to steal a coach like that once they had redeemed themselves.

Where is Dodge? Barnett and Neuheisel would not budge at this job for nothing less than 1.5m. They can make what you are talking about anywhere. We are SMU! You are way off base with this assumption that we are playing in the same league regarding coaching prospects as the other D1 schools. Face the facts. We played our trump card and now we will pay some dip [deleted] 1.5m and he will actually be worth 400k, maybe.

If Barnett can land a $1.5 million job at will, why in the world did he publicly state his interest in SMU and why is he still unemployed. Furthermore, why is he not being interviewed by any schools.
