...fans and alums finally give up on Orisni and his HC search. it is beginning to feel like this answer will be anti-climatic. just wanting to gauge what you all think...would a decision after next Monday be real bad? i am thinking that this is starting to get out of hand especially without any indication of some, moderate progression...

i am almost convinced that Steve-O may be striking out big time...and I dont blame Steve-O by the way...he's been dealt a real tough hand.

i hate to admit it, but with the big names that were out there all along and at least somewhat interested (neuheisel, barnett, bowden and mason), and with the way the PJ thing went down, this thing is really building up to be a huge disappointment. I hope i am wrong.

Also, we tend to forget that many schools are just starting their searches and some schools will have a search in their near future when their current HC leaves (i.e., Vandy, TT). Just b/c we fired first doesn't mean our search is tanking, but the secrecy is killing me.

I have lost total faith in Steve-O.

This occurred the moment he said there was less urgency due to the dead period. I mentioned this to my father (former sports editor) last night. He actually did a double-take, then laughed and said, "Why? Because he has already blown the dead period?"


Steve-O has blown it. He can save some face if he makes a really good hire, but HE is the one responsible if we can't pick up some recruits in January. HE is the one responsible for one more year down the drain because we've had little to no contact with recruits since Nov. 10.

Time to get on your knees Steve-O. Crawl back to Gary Barnett, get him to sign on. Crawl back to Turner and the trustees. Beg them to let you hire him. If you need to, stop by the DG house, I hear they have some kneepads you can borrow.

How has Steve-O blown it? We haven't hired a coach yet, so how could he have possibly blown it? No news isn't necessarily bad news. I've said this before, but we had 5 announced recruits at this time last year (going into the dead period). I understand the anxiety, but we aren't in an awful position yet. Both Ross and Vaught passed the NCAA test to be able to maintain contact with recruits, so your statement about not having had contact with our recruits is flat out wrong (I suggest you pick up a copy of the DMN because it specifically says in the article today that we HAVE been keeping contact with our 7 recruits.)

The point was that no AD would say anything like "there is less of a sense of urgency because of the dead period" unless they don't understand something fundamental about recruiting or they are trying to fend off a PR nightmare.

Bo Pelini was not going to coach in the f' ing National Championship game because he felt it was more important to be working on recruiting, hiring coaches, designing the new playbook and training programs, etc. He will be able to because of the dead period and Miles begged him to come back for it, but listen to Pelini's press conference. All he talked about was the sense of urgency and how much they had to get done by Dec. 17.

Blowing the dead period is HUGE. It's may not be the end of the world, but it is HUGE. Don't buy Orsini's PR BS. He waited to get a coach, and didn't get him. Fine. But he should have had Plan B, C, D, and E all on the line and ready to go if Plan A fell through. It is obvious that he didn't do that. Now the dead period is blown. That is how Steve-O has blown it.

Again. We had 5 at this point last year. Our recruiting class turned out fine. We will be fine.

perunapower you are simply wrong. It is disasterous. What you fail to mention is we got 11+ Commitments in the week after the Dead Period last year. Our new Coach probably will have had no contacts with prospective recruits. Those recruits will have scheduled visits with other schools-if they are any good. TheNew Coach is going to have to contact and try to convince kids to fit SMU into their busy schedule to even get a visit. Once again even today 89% of the Texas Top 100 are committed and 71% of the Area Top 100 is committed. SMU is digging a big hole here.

Husker, you will learn after spending more time on this board that you can repeat your plain, clear, so-easy-to-understand-it's-obvious logic over and over again until the cows come home and there will still be people on this board who either don't get it or refuse to get it. Similarly, you have others who continually spew their conspiracy-laden opinions over and over again and tout them as fact that eventually many people just start assuming they are fact. This board could be a case-study in mental health.

what exactly does "fine" mean? We might have only had 5 but we probably had identified a bunch of players and made offers...ya know the advance steps that lead to the January commits? Regardless, this new coach might only get a one year recruiting honeymoon before he has an on field record to defend. We are shortening the honeymoon period and the recruiting benefit of hiring a new coach. Wait til we go 4-7 next year because we didnt recruit any Juco help on defense, the honeymoon is over and the cycle starts again. This search and this process needed to be different. We got needs.

I too have lost all faith not only in Orsini to find someone, but in SMU's ability to attract a quality candidate. I'm far from a doom and gloomer, but this coaching search, more than anything that has happened over the past 20 years, has led to think that Div. 1A football at SMU is coming to an end.

The most important thing that we fans can do right now is panic. We must all start to hyperventilate and demand things happen within our immediate gratification timeline. We must demand the sacrifice of the future for the immediate satisfaction of having a coach recruit before the dead period.

We have been dead for two decades. Why not be a tad patient and tried to get it right for once since the Pye model was incorporated. To overcome the Commitment to Failure, we must strive for the long haul and not for the possibility of getting one or two recruits committed before Christmas.

A few will be patient and allow the man to work. For the rest of us, panic!!!!

Not saying if it takes until next week to get the right guy we shouldn't do it. Just that all of the available candidates have been available, and Steve-O blew it by not having a solid backup plan he could execute within a weeks time. If it takes him two weeks to firm up the best guy he can get, great. He still has blown a huge opportunity.

Ok, I will go on record to say this. If we get a good head coach (one that will draw interest from non-SMU people), I don't care if we wait until after New Year's. We will generate interest and get some hype, we will have no problem recruiting. No verbals are ever binding, so we will get some people to look our way.

With that being said, if we wait until the holidays and hire Joe Shmoe from Eastern Central Oklahoma Tech Junior College for the Deaf and Blind, then yes we have effectively screwed ourselves in positions we never knew existed.

My point was to quit assuming that Steve-O doesn't know that ideally we needed to have coach before the dead period began. He's been around the block before. No one on this board is more clued in than Steve-O concerning the coaching search and its consequences.
