What about this

Ok, with all the talk of PAIRs of teams being the most viable option, what if they were to get a group of 8 teams, and combine with the MWC to form a 16-team league. Yes, I know the WAC-16 did not work, but let's now worry about 'crossover' games...
How about the MWC-8 in one division and these in another:
TCU/SMU
USM/Tulane
LaTech/Tulsa
Rice/Houston
The only time the play each other is in the conference championship, with the winner going to a BCS-bowl.
So, instead of TCU playing ColState in the Liberty Bowl, that game is now the Champ game and the winner moves on to the BCS (assuming that the BCS would invite this new conference over a BigEast-8/10 which is not going to be stronger than this).
Travel is reduced since each division doesn't have to (well, perhaps one cross over game) travel across the country to play the other side and you still retain 3 or 4 non-conference games.
