Sherrington's Advice

of course neither one of these guys are even under consideration because it would have been a done deal by now

If I'm Steve Orsini, I still hire Jeff Bower to rejuvenate SMU's football program. But if SMU officials can't get over Bower's ties to Bobby Collins' staff and the death penalty, how about Turner Gill? He's from Fort Worth, coached at North Texas and turned around an awful program at Buffalo. Just might be interested, too

Good to see that Sherrington reads the board too, if a little late in the game.

Gill is a very interesting figure in my opinion. He is bound to still have some local connections. He is personable and could relate to the recruits. From what I know of his time with the GB Packers as the Director of Player Development he was well liked and considered an up and comer. Might be a pretty good choice.

I brought up a topic on Gill last Tuesday and there were some supporters and some blasted me for it, but I still say he's the best choice. I even e-mailed Sherrington about him after the SMU article and he replied saying he would be a good choice.

I'd rather have Gill who is a young, motivated coach who has ties to the school and the area and who wants to prove himself, than some retread that got fired from another job and though he may have skins on the wall such as a bowl game or two, you have to question his determination. Perfect example is Coach Fran, it'd be his 4th school in 10 years, he's already a millionaire, would he really have the drive to succeed that Gill would bring to the program?

That's neat, Wally. We should have had the all-knowing Kevin Sherrington making the hire instead of the school athletic director. Did you really e-mail him about the SMU article? Cool.

Ah Bergmeister, or should I say Beav(?), so your the one that STILL has faith in Orsini! Good Luck with that!

Afterall, recruiting is way over emphasized in college sports, don't ya think? So who cares if Orsini waits until January to name a new coach, I am sure they'll be plenty of quality high school seniors still available to sign just waiting around for SMU to name a coach. Besides, after a 1-11 season, obviously SMU is stacked with all-american players and doesn't need any young talent help this season OR next.

Not to mention the concerns of the players who already gave oral commitments to SMU, Todd Dodge proved last year at UNT that commitments prior to a new coaches arrival don't mean squat!

doesn't turner gill have a losing record....i realize he has gotten all kinds publicity but isn't a winning record kind of a "must". he needs to start winning with some consistency first....

i say go with Slick Rick.

Rick is a finalist for the UCLA job. Maybe we are waiting for their decision?
