SMU official says...I talked with an SMU "higher-up" employee today and asked when SMU is going to get a new football coach. He says, "I'll wait for a good one."
That's the key folks. While I'm glad Krag isn't the pick (did he get an offer?), PJ was a top-notch choice that two other BCS schools were after. Orsini is going after a good one. O'Leary was an excellent hire for UCF. I expect this to be another good one.
For Orsini's sake, this hire better be the mother of all hires. This board will explode if he shows up with some unknown coordinator after this very long wait.
"Once the number 3, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

It's hard to wait for ChristmasI sent Santa my coach's wish list long before Thanksgiving. It sure is hard to wait for Christmas. Do you suppose it will come on 12/25 this year, or later?

Yep, those other programs were all foolish to have already made hires. Can you believe they actually hired coaches when the Super Bowl hasn't even been played? What if one of the head coaches from the Super Bowl wants to go coach in college? Foolish, foolish other schools. We are so lucky to have a genius like Orsini. Orsini the genie. Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
SMU has more money to spend than would be expected for a C-USA school. Therefore, SMU has chosen to compete with lower to mid-tier BCS schools or top-tier non-BCS schools for coaching talent, despite currently being a mid-tier non-BCS school.
Take this down a couple notches, but why go to Booz Allen when you could go to McKinsey for the same pay? In this case, SMU (or Booz Allen) is upgrading and will find the right guy, or do you lower your expectations and hire someone you can get more easily. Maybe I have blind faith, but I suspect that Orsini, Turner, Ford, Sewell, etc. aren't ready to settle. Good for them.
I feel what you are saying. My only issue with the coaching search is this. Every football program with a vacancy has a plan to hire the best possible HC. There will be many more vacancies by the time the NFL season is over. Many on this board type and talk like SMU is the only program with a plan to hire the best possible candidate. As time goes on the best possible candidate may not be an upgrade as to speak. Available coaches with more than one option don't choose SMU. I know what Orsini is doing. He is waiting until all the vacancies are filled (if they ever will be). At that point, the possible candidates left will have to compete for the job. It is a good move on his part, but some may choose to take assistant jobs and just wait it out another year or two leaving SMU with another unproven HC. Not to mention what college HC may try to volt to the NFL. We aren't a program thats on the list of most proven HC's. One thing I do like about Orsini is his quiet approach to hiring a coach. The biggest mistake we made this past season was to have 9 televised games and the stupid pony up campaign. Keep quiet, stay humble and sneak up on the football world.
Well said and my sentiments exactly. Every SMU fan in the country should be grateful and excited that A) Orsini has raised over 10 million dollars and is swinging for the fences trying to get somone in here that can turn this thing around, and B) the big boys stepped up to the plate and gave the money. After watching 20 years of major suckage, I can wait a few weeks for a new coach. Hell, I dont' care if he doesn't show up until spring practice.
I'm sorry, but that is an absurd statement.
Take it easy on Big Daddy. This is the most lucid, intelligent, well thought-out post he's ever done. And not one [deleted]. Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.

I'm being sensored so I better behave! My typing rights may be taken away.
Everything he has ever said is absurd.
So tell me what the 9 televised games and the pony up campaign did for our program other than let those who may not have known understand how pathetic we really are.
