Positive Take on the Delay

A upside of the courtship of Johnson is that at this point, any coach that would like to be employed next season has three choices now: UCLA, WVU and SMU.

Any coach not being considered by UCLA and WVU has to be interested in the SMU job or choose not to coach next season (assuming no other positions come available).

In short:

Demand = 3
Supply > 3

It's a buyer's market.

What's the saying?...

The Odds are pretty good... but the goods are pretty odd.

I see your point but a lot of coaches will give a pass to SMU. We are not Michigan or UCLA or UWV. This place is known as a coaching graveyard. Our record over the last 20 years is a testament to our commitment. A lot of lip service but no action.

I grow more frustrated by the minute. If we do have someone locked up I will gladly eat my words. As soon as UWV came open all kinds of names were in the national media. Only PJ has been mentioned for SMU. Orsini will either come out of this as some kind of genius or a guy who couldn't get a decent HC to come here.

This is looking really pathetic.

I see the reasoning, but I believe its flawed for this reason. I don't believe Orsini ever envisioned us not having a coach at this point. He may very well have wanted to wait until the end of the regular season to name a coach, but I certianly don't think he saw us in the position we are in now. But you're absolutely right that its down to SMU, UCLA, and West Virginia so if there are several candidates out there then that bodes well for SMU (in theory).

I have been told all along that we will most likely wait until after a bowl game is over to announce. if the leaks hadn't gotten out about johnson and it was done in private, we probably wouldn't have heard anything about that hire until the 21st

Dutch,

I'm not questioning your sources, but why would we do that?! We are wasting valuable recruiting time as we speak. It just seems like a dumb strategic move IMO.

theres nothing positive about this delay..its just down right sad.

and besides PJ, there has been 1 more coach who said he wanted this job. GARY BARNETT...SMU is more to blame for not having a coach instead of blaming coaches for not wanting to come here.

beggers cant be choosers!

b/c the coach that we would hire will most likely want it that way and to get the guy(s) we're pursuing, that may be the course of action - do it their way, or not at all.

i don't agree with that strategy, but it's apparently what they're doing.

i think by throwing out ALL coaches with a past is a sign that we just dont want any coach coming in and doing whatever he wants with this program...

Turner wants to control the moves, and thats why Orsini hasnt had a press conference yet...its all about finding a "[deleted]" for turner to control

Wrong. Terry Bowden and Neuheisel have been mentioned with SMU in published reports.

We either have someone locked up or we have nothing and are scrambling. I don't know what to believe since no one is talking. The coaching blogs refuse to speculate about us anymore except for the occasional comment from coaching carousel. The national media (ESPN) says nothing about us. We are off the radar. SMUblog does give some comments which is nice.

Turner wanted to announce a hire at the recent board meeting so either there is a huge disconnect between Turner and Orsini or your source is revising history.......

theyve been mentioned but PJ and GB are the only OFFICIAL names that have been reported.
