The reason it's not Coker - they would've hired him today

If Coker is the coach, then why is Orsini waiting for the announcement? Wouldn't it make sense to sign him as soon as possible for reasons of recruiting.....Or at least leak the news today, that he is the head coach, and do a press conferance later in the week? Sorry, but no Coker.

No.
Recruiting is in a dead period, there's nothing he can do until January.
There could be more than one interview, and contract negotiations could take some time. Lack of an announcement today means nothing.
I'm not saying he's hired, but lack of an announcement doesnt mean anything, either way.

Remember the Billy Gillespie saga. Hired by Arkansas, but lured back to A&M, never signs agreement and then lured to Kentucky. So, until you've got a signed contract, you don't announce anything.

Kentucky is 4-4 which I'm kind of enjoying. They play at Houston tonight. May be 4-5. Gillespie pulled one of the all-time dirty tricks on Arkansas but hey that's the way it is these days.

When was the last time we could have a better record than Kentucky 9 games into the season?

Still, Recruits would at least hear that we have a coach and if it is a truly great hire then at least they might be talking/thinking about us until Jan.

Yes, the Gillespie era is not off to an auspicious start in Kentucky. With 7 freshmen on the roster, maybe they should have looked into scheduling Paul Quinn and Houston Baptist, instead of North Carolina and Indiana. Just think how well that would have gone over with the fans.

Remember "dead period" does not mean no contact at all, just limits the face to face contact. Believe you can still call or write at least once a week.
If for a minute you think players aren't being contacted, think again. Our friends at Tulsa and Houston have been in contact with and continue to contact kids down here.

the only problem with that is that Gillespie still doesnt have an official contract...hes getting paid but nothing is set on paper

It seems SMU is in a self-imposed "dead period."

one reason Coker hasn't been hired could be he may be a backup plan
sure Coker is available, but orsini may be close to signing someone else
but if something falls through then he wants to have already met
and discusssed the job with the Larry Coker types

I think that sounds like a likely scenario. Especially if the rumor from the Sporting News that we interviewed Barnett is true too. Could just be getting ready to move quickly on any and all backup plans if we are waiting on the UCLA fallout and it doesn't go in our favor.

This one from Dec. 8:

(Obviously the June Jones thing didn't happen after the Heisman, so there is likely nothing to it, but there were flights we tracked going to Atlanta and Scottsdale around that time which could have been for Chan and Barnett.)
