I see that our options right now include:
Larry Coker - a guy who won a national championship this decade and had his team play for another.
Dennis Francione - flawed, but a good coach who is known for turning around bad programs and recruits well in Texas.
June Jones - former NFL head coach has his team in a BCS game.
If this is what we're waiting for, it'll be worth the wait.

We should have hired Franchione by December 1-I feel comfortable we ain't getting Jones. I'm wondering why all of you seem to have overlooked the evidence there is no way in hell Jones is coming here.

If the worst we do is hire Fran on Jan 3rd instead of Dec 1st, I can live with that.

Coker inherited a National Champ team.

i 2nd that. he did nothing with his players and they have now given Miami the reputation of being thug criminals. i know people will respond by saying he still took them to the title game and won, but the Big East was a bigger joke than it is today. Here was their schedule that year:
1. Penn State 5-6
2. Rutgers 2-9
3. Pitt 7-5
4. Troy 7-4 *I-A Transition Year (mostly played DII teams)
5. FSU 8-4
6. WVU 3-8
7. Temple 4-7
8. BC 8-4
9. Syracuse 4-8
10. Washington 8-4
11. Va Tech 8-4
12. Nebraska 11-2
One team was better than 8-4 and that was overrated Nebraska who was coming off a loss to Colorado. Yes, it was a great season, but ANYBODY can coach a team with the likes of
QB Ken Dorsey
FB Najeh Davenport
HB Clinton Portis
TE Jeremy Shockey
SE Andre Johnson
FL Kevin Beard
LT Bryant McKinnie
DT William Joseph
LE Andrew Williams
WLB D.J. Williams
MLB Jonathan Vilma
SLB Chris Campbell
RCB Mike Rumph
FS James Lewis
SS Ed Reed
LCB Phillip Buchanon
KR Andre Johnson
KR Frank Gore
PR Phillip Buchanon
I rest my case.

What evidence do you have that hasn't been reported? Maybe Jones will consider SMU, maybe he won't. But none of us know for sure, including me and including you. The cursory "I'm not interested" comment is standard fare and can not be construed as "evidence" one way or the other.

That's true. Lots of coaches inherit teams with talent  still got to win the games on the schedule, and Coker did that.

Anybody can coach that team except for apparently Butch Davis. Coker won with players Butch couldnt win with. Im not saying Coker would be a great fit here, but the argument that he won with someone elses players is ingorant and the fact is he won with players a previous coach couldnt. If anything I would think that is a plus.

I don't quite get the "he wouldn't be a good fit here" stuff. Any top notch coach would be a good fit at SMU. As far as JJ, I think something was in the mix. May still be. May have been an agreement about no leaks? Then got leaked. This really is getting very strange. I don't think Coker nor Fran. are really who SO wants. If he really wanted them he would have already hired one or the other. But then the Mich. thing was strange as well as WVU. So was Ark. UCLA is kinda weird too. Who knows what will appear from the hat? I wouldn't count out JJ yet.

Fact is Miami's program was downgraded so much while Coker was Head Coach that Coker was FIRED last year, and that makes some people want to let him be trusted to rebuild our program ?

Coker has only been a head coach at Miami and has never rebuilt any program. Where is Fran and June Jones both have rebuilt programs.

Don't think it will be either Fran. or Coker. I haven't a clue as to who he is. Still could be JJ. Seems like half of this board is so pessimistic and the other half is optimistic. I think SO will do better than Fran. Everyone I have talked to about this thing has the same impression that the guy is pretty sleazy. I guess Coker is in the middle. Why don't you just give Erickson a big paycheck. Buy him out from ASU, and win. ASU paid 1.5 m $. He is probably the best in the country aside from Jimmy Johnson. He really is a hired gun, so to speak.
Buy him out. You have some very rich alumni. You have a very storied past to say the least. GF, NOT FMC, and the Hunts and the Irsays and God knows who? Buy someone. I still have this Dungy thought. I know it's out there. Oh well.

well, Butch went 11-1 in 2000 when he had that team. Still a great record. His only loss came to a good Washington team led by Slick Rick. He won with the same players, Coker just won one more game with a more mature and better squad
