WF has about 4,000 undergraduate students, so about 2/3 the size of SMU. But they are in a BCS conference.

Wake is a great model for the private schools. Other than USC, BC and maybe Miami, who can you name with more recent success? Among the BCS players, certainly not: Notre Dame, Stanford, Northwestern, Vandy, Baylor, Duke, Syracuse.

From the outside, it would appear they are doing it the "right" way, also. Long term commitment to a solid coach who redshirts everybody. Two solid years in a row improves the recruiting and they are able to ride the "virtuous cycle" so long as they can keep Grobe. Now you'd have to say Wake is set up to be a perennial upper division ACC program. How cool is that?

But it's helped a great deal that Florida State has weakened dramatically in the last few years, and that none of the North Carolina schools has a decent program going on right now.

Regarding Wake, they've only had success for the past two years, so let's not get ahead and suddenly say they're a model for success. Even with last year's 11-win season, Grobe is only a little more than a .500 coach at the school.

Winston Salem is also a nice sleepy, medium sized town that is about as far from the world of pro sports as you can get. Wake gets a ton more community support than we get, although i am sure they would like more.

Oh, I have to read enough "if Wake can, why can't we" on Duke boards. Ugh.

In addition to the plusses mentioned elsewhere (Winston-Salem is supportive and not a pro town; they get BCS money; the other ACC North Carolina schools are down; many other traditional ACC powers are down), I'll add the preexisting fan base for the basketball program.

On the other hand, their stadium is an outdated dump (Amon Carter, but smaller and with less charm). Grobe is an impressive guy.

I'd take 2 years of success over the crap product we've been putting out for 20+! Hell, I'd take 2 W's at this point....
