Here is the timeline

Today - final details are getting worked out w/ JJ, LS, Dr. T., SO

Thursday - Hire will be leaked to media in time for 5:00 PM local news. Leak will still be listed as "unofficial"

Thursday - Late in the evening an email will go out the SMU Community about an annoucement on Friday that they are invited to attend.

Friday - Late afternoon PC on the floor of Moody (similar set-up as Jimmy Tubbs PC - I wasn't in town for the Matt D PC so maybe similar to that as well.)

Turner and SO want a big, big crowd and want it to seem packed. Location could be moved if they think to crowd is going to be small. Maybe team meeting room in the basement of Loyd.

Needless to say things can change, but that is how things stand at 11:40.

This thing will not be totally resolved until Friday afternoon at the earliest. I would not be surprised to see this drag on through next week. However, I do think the longer this thing takes to get done, the less likely it will be that Jones leaves Hawaii to come here.

With no students in town (dorms don't open until Monday) they can't get a crowd. A press conference in Moody would be a disaster.

Doherty press conference was in the press room.

Rush is next week. They could conceivable wait until next week for a press conference and hold it at Moody. Pres. Turner could tell the greeks no rush activities during the press conference and they are welcome to attend. The opportunity for unfettered rush contact during the day at the press conference might be too much for the greeks to resist and get darn near full attendance. Of course, the rush schedule would have to be changed and that would PO the sororities, but screw 'em (no pun intended). Embarassed to say, if you don't tell greeks they can't have an activity during the press conference they wouldnt show up.

BTW, it is a crime against humanity that there may be no recruits in town to watch the Pig Run.

Maybe it does stretch out to next week. Blog makes some good points. I have heard that the are ready to get this done ASAP (like the rest of us) and if they can get details finalized it is going to happen sooner than later... I could be very wrong -- it happen once back in the early 90's.

Very good, ASDF. I've heard the administration -- SO, RGT -- really want to make a big deal of the hire. Lots of pomp and circumstance surrounding the announcement.

Obviously, Jones has done a remarkable job at Hawaii. Personally, I would have hired Fran - if he was interested - the day after the Aggies beat the Horns.

Fran to me is a better fit at SMU than Jones.

Sooner than later could still stretch into next week, but I would bet on the weekend.

The Hawaii team is flying back today. (didn't one of the articles say something about them leaving at 11:00?) You have to factor in the flight time from New Orleans to Hawaii, and the article said that JJ is heading to Kona for a week for "time off" (meaning he is going to meet with his agent, give UH a chance to counteroffer, and make a decision). So, JJ won't even be in Kona to meet with his agent until late tonight (CST). Tomorrow will be the day to finalize details, see if WVU or an NFL team has an offer, and see what UH comes up with to try and retain him. Then, I would guess he takes a day to think about it.

Unless things are worked out much more than they are letting on--which I'm sure they are to some extent, we just don't know how involved JJ has been up to this point--we've got at least 48 hours before we hear about any movement, if not longer. So Friday would be the earliest, more likely some time Sat.-Mon.

The important thing time-wise is the next recruiting contact period. Someone made a valid point earlier that this weekend is likely out of the question, so he would want to make a decision (whether he is leaving or staying at UH) with at least a few days lead time to get organized (and maybe fly to Dallas!) before the next contact period starts. I would say that makes the beginning of next week the latest he can drag it out.

Husker,

I've heard conflicting things -- one is telling me that Jones won't be on that flight back to Hawaii today but the other is saying that the SMU group was meeting with him this a.m. in NO.

My gut says that Jones heads back to the Island with the team but turns around and comes back to Dallas on Thurs or Friday for a Monday announcement.

He should be nice and peppy at the press conference then. Hawaii to NO to Hawaii to Dallas all in one week sounds like a blast.

I would guess that both could be true. SO could have met with him early this morning before he got on the flight with the team. If the report of him going to Kona is true though, I'd still bet he spends a day or two there working out details and making a final decision. There would be a stop to meet with the UH players and tell them of his decision before he would come to Dallas too. (Unless of course a decision is already finalized and he tells them today.)

My guess is probably Monday whether its June, Fran, or someone else. Saturday and Sunday are out of the question with NFL playoff games going on and reporters covering that stuff (and if its Shula). The leaks may occur over the weekend. I think it will take at least until Friday before the bidding war is over on JJ.
