Sounds to me like JJ is letting his agent do all the dirty work...so if anyone is slow playing SMU, it would be Steinberg.

Still no where close to ours, especially when you figure in property taxes and etc. If he decides to stay in Hawaii its going to have to be for reasons other than money.

If he stays in Hawaii will it be because of SMU's anti-competitive model in which it operates?

I think that article is just a compilation of old info.

With the moaning he's been doing about the Hawaii facilities, etc., it really seems like he's not staying. Not when there are offers out there (at least) as good as SMU's.

Question: does a winning coach put his reputation on the line for more money to coach at a school with a reputation for being a coaching graveyard and an anti-competitive model? Not saying this is the case with a coach coming to SMU...just asking.

I think he believes he can't do this again at Hawaii - he's hit the ceiling out there.

Exactly. What more can he accomplish out there? Other than winning the Sugar Bowl.....

I'd say it depends on the situation. The money would double his salary. But JJ seems to be more concerned with the support he gets from the school and the athletic department as far as assistant salaries, facilities, and operating budget.
The "situation" at Hawaii might actually be worse than SMU except for their recent success--which is attributed by everyone to the coaching of June Jones. Even location, although nicer to live, makes recruiting more difficult. Parents don't want to send their kids that far away and he has no money to travel and recruit kids.
The interview he gave the other day sure made it seem like he was considering the move and was fed up with the conditions at Hawaii.

The article reads 'too little, too late'. I believe he will move on. He can't improve on this year at UH and his stock has peaked for the moment.
SMU is a nice option for him beyond the money with a great market and a cinderella story to be made. Someone will make his mark here and, if he has an ego, we could be the place.
In any case, I am ready for an announcement from Orsini. I bet he won't dissapoint us. The hand wringing has been over the top. We are a great opportunity for someone.

I think with a guy who appears to be reaching the end of his coaching career, money might be able to persuade him.
If we were talking Chris Peterson from BSU as an example, then no, I don't think it can completely make up for the risk he would take to come here. His star is on the rise, and he is still young.
But f! it, what do I know?
