JJ's first season at UH

Postby mr. pony » Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:48 am

1998: Before JJ, 0-12

1999: with JJ, 9-4

Why, at SMU, must we always be looking at a 5- or 6-year plan, for Pete's sake??

The right coach, a good coach, makes a difference IMMEDIATELY. Happens time after time - everywhere but SMU.

Was everybody just sold a bill of goods at the beginning of the '07 season. Weren't some of the media predicting a CUSA championship season with the talent PB recruited.

I know it didn't quite turn out that way, but with half the season having been decided in the last minute of the game, I think that is more a result of poor PB coaching and too much pressure on the kids trying to save their coaches job.

I don't think it is unreasonable to think the right coach could take Willis, Sanders, Smart and crew and coach them up. At least if the new coach could "coach them up" to win those games that were lost on the last couple of plays, that would get us to respectability.

Anyone who thought we were going to win more than 4 games this yr was delusional. That group included the entire season tickets sales team.

How do you know that the talent at Hawaii was any better in his first year?

How many times were we leading by 2 or 3 touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th quarters only to lose? How many games did we lose in OT? If we had a coach who would teach these kids how to finish we would have had a winning record. We need a killer instinct. End of conversation.

The right coach can produce much better than 1-11 with the talent we have right now.

The right coach could have produced 8 wins and bowl last year.

you guys are delusional. Not with what is on the field on defense. I will agree SMU is not a 1-11 team. A break here and there we should have won 4 games. There is no way in hell SMU had a good enough team to win 8 games-the talent and experience simply wasn't there. But I guess a couple of months after the season as people look toward spring training some of you can't resist the Red Kool-Aid-and forget SMU had probably the worst defense in SMU History other than the JV team we sent out there in 1989.

I meant 8 games in 2006, not 07.

I said 4 was a stretch in 2007.

The defense was young. Next year we will get to benefit from the teachings of a defensive specialist...one Phil Bennett
