Kate's story:
While SMU appears to have targeted Hawaii coach June Jones, the school has also recently had talks with Mike Martz, according to a source familiar with the school's search.

The Detroit Lions reportedly fired Martz, their offensive coordinator for two seasons, on Wednesday.

Martz is the former St. Louis Rams coach credited for "The Greatest Show on Turf."

His last stint in the college ranks ended in 1991 as Arizona State's offensive coordinator, with Martz moving on to the NFL.

SMU was the first Bowl Subdivision program to make a coaching change when it fired Phil Bennett on Oct. 28. With West Virginia naming Bill Stewart as head coach Thursday, SMU is the last remaining school with an opening.

Reported on another thread. I guess Rich Phillips is Kate's "source familiar with the search"?

Does not fit what we need. We need a proven Div. 1-A winner.

He never won the SB as a head coach, Vermeil was. When he was HC they lost to the Pats on a last second field goal.

You are correct. Sorry for the error. He still fielded one heck of a team and put on a great, winning show.

Agreed.
Marv Levy's a pretty damn good coach, too.
