1. He is an arrogant SOB. Read some of his comments and sound-bites over the years if you don't believe me.
2. Not a proven college recruiter.
3. Would be starting from scratch with respect to gathering a competent, capable college coaching/recruiting staff.
4. I am personally not impressed with anything he did in the pros, but especially at Detroit at OC.
5. See #1
EDIT: 6. Not the guy to be the face of our program and cause excitement about SMU football.
1. Arrogant? He may be but name someone outside of Larry Coker in this coaching search that you couldn't consider arrogant? Jones? Fran? Bowden? Here's a secret...most football coaches are full of arrogance. All you should want is a winner. What you think Saban/Rodriguez/et al coaches aren't arrogant? Please. We'll agree to disagree on this one being a problem.
2. See, to me this isn't a GIGANTIC problem. Most of these kids watched the 199-2002 Rams, and know how explosive his offenses always are. Oh yeah they'll also remember both his Detroit Lions teams...dismantling of the Cowboys defense. Martz knows talent. He wants speed. Dallas has speed. I'm not talking about some Top 50 HS WR with 4.4 speed. Go to a track meet and some of the games in the 'inner' city...there's plenty of speed there. Watch tape of when Crabtree was at Carter. Never caught the ball. There were plenty of burners that left him in the dust. And we all know what Crabtree did in college football this year. Trust me these kids are thinking about the pros...wrong or right..and a former Head Coach who has gone to a Super Bowl and lost to......that's right the Patriots, arguably against one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.
3. The only point I can see here is who wuold be his recruiting coordinator....other than that he could build a staff easily.
4. What doesn't impress you about what he did at the pros? Do I really need to pull the numbers from his stints from the Rams? With the lions suffering from a HORRIBLE offensive line he still did a good job. Injuries to the #1 tailback (Kevin Jones, watch him after he leaves Detroit), WR's (Johnson suffered from a back problem all year, Roy at the end with various injuries). With the Rams he constantly had one of the top 5 offenses including three years as the #1 offense....
5. Next.
6. So a NFL head coach with a 62% winning percentage is nothing? Trust me, the man will get a job either in the NFL or NCAA and after a few bumps and bruises he'll construct a juggernaut again...then you will be happy with your 5-7 win team. Show me a place where he hasn't improved the offense and\/or team......
