BREAKING NEWS: Bowden not an option for SMU
by Mark Norris, Editor in Chief, [email protected]

Don't count on Terry Bowden to be another option in SMU's head coaching search. The ex-Auburn coach was rebuffed multiple times by SMU this fall when he inquired about the position according to a source who spoke with Bowden while he was in Dallas calling the Cotton Bowl for Westwood One Radio.

Told you he would run his portly back hind here as fast as his tiny legs would carry them. He would have signed whenever, wherever, however.

so 9 weeks ago he could've been our head coach. Risk/Benefit, folks. Was whatever risk he presented outweighed by the benefit we'd have gotten from name recognition, and most of all having a damn coach in place a long time ago?

Restated, is the harm that's been done by waiting so long (some on here have said essentially we've affected the next four years) really worth whatever drawbacks a national media face would've given us?

It's important to note that every other school in the nation rebuffed him, too, including his alma mater. I'm just saying.

There is no benefit to having a known quitter as your head coach. He hasn't coached in almost a decade, apparently for good reason, and I'd rather wait a little bit to have a coach that will be good for SMU than a washed up has been. Having said that, I'm going to be pissed if we don't get JJ and end up with Fran (which I still think would be a good option), in mid January instead of the beginning of December.

There are two issues with Bowden:

1) Trustee's daughter. This has nothing to do with his ability to coach, nor does it necessarily make him a bad person. And who knows, maybe not even true. It just puts the university presidents in a very difficult position with their trustees. The presidents and trustees have to sign off on all coaching hires. This is usually a rubber stamp, unless the hire is potentially problematic.

2) He's been out of coaching for 9 years. That's a pretty big gap on your resume.

Not saying he wouldn't be a great hire. Just the reason why no one has taken him. Why would a university that wasn't desperate take a chance on angering their trustee's over a coach who has been out of the game for a decade? There are other qualified candidates available. (Although if JJ falls through, I'd say SMU may be qualifying as desperate.)

WVU didn't take him (his alma mater) where his dad started his coaching career and was pressuring the governor to hire him. If he didn't get that job, he won't get one.

SMU turned Bowden down because he hadn't coached in NINE years and not because he porked some Trustee's daughter.

Yes, I know that [deleted] Vermeil hadn't coached in 15 years and won a Super Bowl. I am sure Orsini knows, too. And so did the sixteen other schools that passed on him this year.

Exactly one interview in nine years.
This guy has become the plague of coaching.

Not to sound like a turd, but this jives with something I heard from somebody else around the Paul Johnson era. I never said it because it wasn't my info to use. That and I never felt strongly about Bowden one oway or the other. That person has his or her own publication and he or she had the right to tell the masses. Not sure if that person ever did.

We seem to be the plague of coaching jobs. Maybe it is a good fit.

Bowden would have been a great hire for SMU. Just the right amount of excitement and name recognition and experience.

Unless there's something we don't know, I think it's a shame we didn't pull the trigger.
