Mustangs 'fishing' for replacement
Posted on: Wednesday, January 02, 2008, 11:09 PM
It's completely understandandable that college football programs want to make big splashes when looking for a new coach, but there are times when going after that "big catch" is doomed before the boat even leaves the dock.
On Wednesday ESPN.com reported (according to unidentified sources) that Southern Methodist University is going after Hawaii coach June Jones, whose Warriors were thoroughly embarrassed by the Georgia Bulldogs in Tuesday night's Sugar Bowl.
The report stated that SMU is willing to pay Jones between $1.5 and $1.7 million per year.
Most coaches would likely jump at the chance to make seven figures, but apparently the Mustangs didn't take into account of where Jones coaches.
Practically every day for the past nine years Jones has awakened in what most would consider paradise. A place where you can wear shorts and flip-flops all year round, go to the beach on your lunch break and have an authentic luau every single night.
Along with having a perma-tan, Jones has an almost exclusive pick of some of the best football players outside of Texas, Florida or California. The 53-year-old coach also has the rare privilege of being the head man of the biggest game in town (or island if you prefer).
Dallas isn't exactly a small stage, but it's a good six to seven hours to a beach, snow isn't uncommon and then there is Jerry Jones.
Hawaii's Jones has proven he can turn a program around, but there is no quick fix for the SMU football program that is still trying to recover the NCAA's death penalty 20 years ago.
Not only are the Mustangs trying to wrangle Jones away from paradise, the report also states that SMU has talked with former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione, which begs the question, "What!?"
Unless I'm mistaken, I thought SMU was trying to distance itself from its scandalous ways.
Apparently, the Mustangs don't have a problem of going after Moby [deleted] with an earthworm for bait and a leaky boat.
Normally this would be the point where I would give you some sports randomness, but since I had the opportunity to "bowl watch" for the last three days here are some of my favorite moments from the past weekend.
The Holiday Bowl didn't disappoint with Texas and Arizona State combining for 86 points, but the best part of that game was when Mack Brown's stepson Chris Jessie didn't touch the ball. After a fumble came his way on the sideline, Jessie went to reach for the ball as it trickled out of bounds and was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which led to an ASU touchdown.
The best part of that situation was when commentator Brent Musberger instructed the sideline reporter to find out who the person was. A few minutes later, Jessie almost became the new Steve Bartman after his identity was revealed by a wheezing Lisa Salters.
Who would have thought that Florida State would give Kentucky that much trouble in the Music City Bowl? The Seminoles were missing 36 players because of an academic scandal and yet nearly knocked off the Wildcats. Bobby Bowden might be getting old, but not only did he do the right thing by suspending those players, it's clear that he is still one of the best motivators in the college game.
Heading into the Capital One Bowl, I certainly didn't give Michigan a fighting chance against Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators with their spread offense. Of course, we all know how the Wolverines fared against the spread offenses of Appalachian State and Oregon earlier in the year, but Michigan didn't quit against the Gators and didn't quit on their coach Lloyd Carr, who was coaching his final game. That was definitely a special Gatorade bath.
Had USC not lost twice during the year, the argument could be made that the Trojans deserve another national championship after pummeling Illinois in the Rose Bowl. The Trojans let Illinois hang around a little bit, but it wasn't long before USC asserted itself and gave everybody in the country reason to take notice for next year.
So Hawaii getting beat by Georgia wasn't exactly a favorite moment for me considering I was the only one in the office to pick the Warriors, but at least I got to watch the game with one of my oldest friends who was in town for the night. The beer and laughs made up for it.
