I still think this might not be a bad route to go. Look at what Mangino has done at Kansas, Rodriguez at West Virginia, Urban Meyer.

good question because "that guy" is out there somewhere. In that vein, because he is a head coach at another mid major, so a bit of a cinderella candidate, I think that Turner Gill would have been a phenomenal hire at SMU in particular. Would have been a gutsy for SMU. Thats what i want to see from our school, guts and foresight and a plan. Gill met every criteria SMU has and then some from D-1 coaching experience to integrity to energy to recruiting prowess locally. Fran, Coker and most of the jokers we talk about represent the easy way out. Cover your arse hires. No imagination, no guts. Thats my opinion.

Really impressive resume. Would have been great for SMU. And we would have had money for him to hire some top notch assistants since he wouldn't require the 2mil/year salary.

I've thought Gill would be an excellent choice all along.
My favorite is Barnett with Gill & Dodge in the mix.
We should have hired Dodge last year after the Rice loss.
Probably could have had him for 500k.

IMO, all of this coaching search was interesting for awhile.
I will be happy when it finally gets put to bed.
Personally, I don't see JJ or Fran taking this team any further than Barnett, Dodge or Gill could.
They are all quality coaches & I just don't agree with the long process to find a HC.

I agree. Is JJ better than any of the others that have been mentioned? I think not.

That West Virginia coordinator sure managed to work himself into a job.
