What is the problem with some of you ???

Postby westexSMU » Fri Jan 04, 2008 2:56 am

I can't believe some of you on here are [deleted] like this right now....Sure the search has been to slow and all, but look at the bright side.. I mean Steve Orsini has raised $12 MILLION DOLLARS for our new Football Coaches salaries....Whether or not you think Coach June Jones is the perfect candidate or not, if he comes here he will WIN....If he doesn't, it appears we get Fran.....I think Fran can win here too. Both would be positive for recruiting...Not Bad...Remember if it wasn't for Orsini, we wouldn't have this kind of money for a great Head Coach and quality assistants .....These guys are not my 1st choices either, but they can get the job done....I'm telling you, we are going to get this program turned around !!!

Orsini has obviously done a great job of rasing money but I can't believe he would let Johnson, then Jones delay a hire like this. From the day the boosters committed the $10 million nothing has changed for SMU. We haven't won anymore games and there is still $10 million on the table.

Jones and Johnson should have been put to a decision a long time ago. Either you want the big check that comes with this challenge or you don't.

Orsini is acting like the nerdy guy who spends two years being friends with a girl he wants to date because he's too afraid of rejection. He would have saved himself a lot of MONEY and TIME had he gone in for the kiss up front. Take a shot and live with the results.

Sure he has made mistakes or others on the committee have caused him to make mistakes, but at this point, I just want to start winning. We can win with JJ or Fran.

Everyone is whipped over the delay to get a coach.
Everyone is worried about recruiting.

I agree with you, when its all said & done we will have a much better HC,
maybe 1 or 2 solid recruits we didn't expect & looking forward to spring practice.

Maybe next year or 2 years from now we will be 7-5 in the New Orleans Bowl looking forward to a bigger bowl the following year.

I just hope by the end of today we aren't saying NEXT to whoever is next in line for HC. I still think JJ will stay in Hawaii. We will find out soon.

Are you kidding? Why would you want an AD that takes some risks in order to get a good coach? Hiring a mediocre coach quickly so we can continue mediocre recruiting and, in turn, playing mediocre football is much better than actually taking some calculated risks to land a qualilty football coach. Oh, you're embarrassed because we have taken so long and still don't have a coach and you think our recruiting will nosedive. I can't believe you are willing to sacrifice another mediocre recruiting class this year for the real chance to get this program on the right track and have better recruiting classes as soon as next year.
If you believe the press, we actually pursued Johnson and Slick Rick, among others. Why? Why not go the unproven OC or DC route again. You don't think SMU is a destination job? You don't think we can find a diamond in the rough and that we actually need a proven HC winner. What a joke!

According to the press, Fran is also in the mix and is a great step up from our past coaches and has been available since November and we may end up with him anyway if Jones sh1ts on us...if we're lucky. And all the while we've given up recruiting for a 1-11 team.

You know, I agree, what a joke!

Don't forget Terry Bowden. How can you consider Larry Coker and Chan Gailey and not Bowden. Dumbest thing I have ever seen.

westexSMU.....

I am with you
it boils down to this
in my mind "they don't get it"
they are like children asking "Mommy when are we gonna get there"?
they think we are "blind sunshiners" they think we "don't get it"
people, especially these days want instant gratification
i guess the "proof will be in the pudding"
if we are still 1-11 three years from now, they'll say "I told ya so"
if we have a team like Orsini/O'Leary UCF they'll be saying "I never said that"

Not considering Gary Barnett is even worse given his track record for turning around programs like SMU!

You are, and if you ignore the detriment of foregoing a full recruiting class, you don't.

The whole idea that we're in this position because we haven't given coaches ultimatums is ridiculous. You might as well not go after any of them. We would have just received faster rejections. We're not in the position to make demands.

westexSMU....see what did I tell you?....lol.

of course JTstang "you are too" and you IGNORE what
a great thing it could be for recruiting long term for
us to get the "right guy". Sure we could have ran out and
signed Art Briles or some coordinator and got started on
recruiting earlier this year .....but it isn't about just this year.

Oh boy just look at all the great, great recruiting classes we
had the last few years when we did have a coach! Thats the
point.....we had a coach.....the wrong coach and the recruiting
classes still sucked. So Steve Orsini is thinking long term, he is
thinking not just about this year.

Sure we could have run out and hired a Barnett but we dont
know all the details....you dont, I dont. Thats why we pay a
guy like Orsini...Orsini has a track record, and it's a good one.
Orsini is a professional at this. So go right ahead and pretend
you know more than the boss/teacher/doctor.....
employees/students/patients do that everyday.

Excuse me if I trust Steve Orsini. If trusting someone with
a real track record of success as oppossed to message board
"experts" makes me a "Sunshiner" so be it!

Finally a thread with some degree of sanity.

1. Any meaningful hire requires effort and time, especially when we are trying to change a paradigm. A quick hire for an established BCS program would yield a top tier coach. For SMU it would mean an unproven OC/DC.
2. I believe that Orsini thought that he had PJ "in the bag". But word leaked out, and GT jumped in. Quality BCS program vs. #119 program at same money. This probably extended our search.
3. JJ, maybe SO's first choice even over PJ, would not even consider an offer until after his bowl game.
4. Bowden, Barnett, Coker were never a consideration for a quality program, anywhere. Thank you Orsini for knowing more than we know and not accepting a future problem.
5. Six months ago, Fran was the laughing stock of all the local media and this board, even before the news letter deal, so why is he so great now? Fran may be where we end up, but I can't blame SO for looking further.
6. We have not given up on a recruiting class yet and if JJ comes, we might pick up 2-3 four star types. Now wouldn't that be a change.

I want to know as much as the next guy, but I am also tired of SMU running a fourth class football program. I would like our athletics to be on a par with the rest of our school. I'm ok with waiting.

(Contrary to some earlier posts, I am just an alum with no ties or sources within the AD, or any other, office of the school.)

Or Franchione, a BCS coach and proven mid-tier turnaround guy.
