June Jones has resigned as University of Hawaii head football coach, according to his close friend, Al Souza.
Jones resigned this morning, citing among other things a lack of loyalty and commitent from athletic department leaders.
"This breaks his heart," Souza said of Jones' decision to leave.
Jones sent letters to friends announcing that he is resigning after nine seasons. He thanked his friends for their support in the letter, in which he listed several reasons why he would no longer coach at the school.
Jones is en route to Dallas, where he will meet with other SMU officials about the Mustangs vacant head coaching job.
Jones is scheduled to meet with the SMU president, athletic director, search committee and boosters tomorrow. During that time, he is expected to receive a contract offer that would pay him up to $2 million a year.
Jones currently earns $800,016 from Hawaii on a contract that expires June 30.
