Does this signal a move to MWC for FSU?

No more non-qualifiers.

The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

NO!!!!! Its the most pathetic attempt I have seen to pull the wool over the eyes of its detractors. What they are not telling you is that the NCAA will no longer use SATs/ACTs to determine initial qualification. Notice they didn't say they would no longer take kids with SATs/ACTs that don't meet the old NCAA standards. Just that they would no longer take "non-qualifiers" as that term is now defined. So kids who were partial qualifiers last year because of poor SAT/ACT scores can now become full qualifiers as long as they meet the NCAA minimum standards for GPA in Core Courses. Fresno sees that they can sidestep the negative publicity by simply redirecting their recruiting towards this large group of kids who have SAT/ACTs so low that they probably couldn't be admitted to any school requiring even minimal standards. In other words they can still go right on signing and now admitting kids with 600 SATs or lower. They will be sacrificing the few kids who may not meet NCAA Core GPA standards---BUT only for one year. In the past they would have to sit out a year anyway to establish elegibility. Coach Hill has already said they will go on recruiting these kids but now wait until they complete JC/CC. It is unbelievable to me that NCAA initial eligibility standards are going down not up. Admitedly, the NCAA has placed into affect some more stringent requirements for athletes to make progress toward a degree. But they will be side-step by channeling recruits into football factory majors like Farm & Ranch(I swear Jackie Sherrill had half the squad in that major at A&M) and Kineseology.

Very interesting article in the August 2003 Texas Monthly. Title is "Rice and Shine" by Paul Burka. Thought-provoking comments by Rice Institute President Malcom Gillis. Definitely reform-minded.

I hate Fresno State. I hate being in the same conference as Fresno State. I have no respect for Fresno State. The type of "student-athlete" Fresno recruits for its basketball and football programs is simply amazing. We may suck on the gridiron (although that is hopefully changing) but I wouldn't want to sacrifice our school's integrity to the extent Fresno State has simply for Ws. I hope the NCAA slams their hoops program. WAC or not.

To a lesser extent, this rant is also applicable to San Jose State, Hawaii, and La. Tech. Although they haven't had the "success" that Fresno State has.

It occurred to me that the previous post seems pretty holier than thou considering our own history with football. Oh well. We've moved past that now so its OK to bag on others.
