Coaching Thoughts...

As early as the end of October, I mentioned that June Jones would be a good fit for the 'Stangs. And, I still hope he stays. Instant credibitilty for the Hilltop.
But, if not. I would have Orsini talk to Turner and go ahead and get Fran. Chat with him about the email mess. Don't forget that this coach has beat Texas the last two seasons. And, finally, this is good for BOTH parties. They need to let Coach Fran say that....and tell him, they will put a $5 million buy out clause in the contract.
It would be best for both. I know many of you like Coach Martz, and if that goes well, good luck as well.
I really think the A.D. worked hard to deliver a Coach to "change SMU forever". If Coach Jones says no....he can still make it happen.
Good Luck Ponies!

If Jones falls through the search goes from badly handled to a disaster.

Have you changed your view? Will it no longer be an "unmitigated disaster"?

I might if you can identify the mitigating factors and I agree with you.

Nope, wasn't mishandled. Orsini took two huge, albeit calculated, gambles on PJ and now JJ. On the first, he missed and on the second, he possibly missed. But you can't say it was "mishandled."

Stop being a GD enabler.
If Jones doesn't take it, it is BAD. Not good. A 75 day Blankin' wait without a coach is not good for this program. It was a gamble that quite frankly SMU may not be able to afford.
THIS IS BAD. THIS MAKES SMU LOOK BAD. THIS IS EMBARASSING.
I am sick of the [deleted] apologists on this board telling me that everything is going perfectly. It only makes you look stupid.
REMAIN CALM!!! ALL IS WELL!!!

I don't think there is anything to mitigate so there are no mitigating factors. Again, if at the beginning of this process Orsini gave us the option of hiring a sure-thing quickly or aiming high and and facing rejection by several candidates (and still maybe ending up with a sure-thing coach that we could have had 2 months ago), I choose door #2. If we miss, we miss. At least we tried. The downside, that our recruiting for this year suffers a little bit, so be it. Did we have a top 25 class in the making this year that we now lose? It's a calculated risk where the potential benefits far outweigh the risks in my mind so while it may not be preferable, it is by no means an unmitigated disaster. But, you are certainly entitled to your opinions (and to re-state them in every other posting)...

The hell I can't. If we end up hiring somebody we could have had back at the beginning of December who could have been setting up and recruiting to improve a 1-11 team, then we should have hired him back then. Landing Jones is the only possible saving grace for this deal, and anybody who says otherwise is a blind sunshiner who probably thinks we weren't 1-11, "just a few bad breaks from 7-5" or some bullsh1t like that.

He never said that sunshine. He always had a percentage on it and it's maybe turning bad. Jones could still say yes and pull Orsini's @ss out of the fire.

Good lord, calm down. Where did I defend Orsini? All I said was that it wasn't mishandled, he just shot and missed twice.
Mishandled= Michigan AD not being reachable when Les Miles was trying to reach him to go over LSU's offer.
I was arguing more that Orsini simply took a couple of huge risks and (possibly) failed on both. That isn't mishandling anything...

We will be good with JJ or without him.
SO has shown he is serious about bringing in a quality candidate (just not the right ones so far) There are still many very good coaches available.
Bring me the head of GARY BARNETT !
