JJ vs. PJ

Ok - now that it things are looking good with JJ...are we better off than we would have been with PJ? Who is the better coach?

Both turned around small programs that were in very difficult places to recruit. Both have excellent track records. I am thrilled that these were the 2 guys that SO focused on.

What do you guys think? Who is better for SMU?

I certainly liek the JJ offense better than PJ . . .

I think Willis and Sanders would agree with me.

JJ also has coached a Heisman candidate and in a BCS bowl - which I think is a sig. plus over PJ.

June Jones - instant legitimacy.

Plus kids want to play in his offense. Good talent wants to stay away from PJ's offense.

JJ brings a lot to the table.

--Instant name recognition
--Coached in a BCS game
--Wins with players who don't have a gazillion stars by rating services
--Knows how to recruit locally
--Makes the best of bad situations (facilities, lack of budgets)
--Is another JJ in Dallas. Not a bad deal.
--Newsmaker
--Legitimacy
--NFL contacts
--Hopefully brings his D-Coordinator who is a recognized kick-butt recruiter.
--Knows how to promote his team (i.e., promotion of Heisman candidates)

Completely agree.

I've been yanked around by the emotional roller coaster that is this search enough to not believe anything is official until a press conference is held, but IF we have our man, it's the right man. Top 10 team with basically zero resources, much more entertaining style of football ....

As most know, I'm biased towards PJ as he was the coach at my school in the late 90s, early 2000s and I can say he's a fantastic coach, but so is JJ. If he can win at Hawaii where there were obvious limitations, then he should be successful at a school that has made a commitment to the football program.

My advice (fwiw), don't worry about what could have been, but embrace what you have.

After all that has been said and done, I think JJ is the better choice for us. He brings national name recognition, an offense that players want to play for, and hopefully a staff with recognized recruiting talent on it. I think the deal is even better if his DC comes with him and is going through our current recruiting tapes as we speak. We've had plenty of players cherry picked from us in the past, let's see if we can return the favor in the next 4 weeks.
