Was it Worth the Wait?

Postby ponyte » Mon Jan 07, 2008 3:24 pm

Was the hiring of June Jones worth the wait? Many have said no coach was worth waiting so long. Others have said the best possible coach is worth the wait. Now that we know the coach, have any opinions or thoughts change?

Welcome Coach Jones and good luck :P

The right decision is always worth the wait. A bad decision isn't!

Even Terry Bowden said about the SMU search, "Losing a few recruits will not make or break your program. The right coach will." I'm sure he was referring to himself and not Jones, but I take his point.

More than worth it in this case.

For Jones? Yes.

If it had been for Fran, Bowden, or any other coach that was available in Nov/Dec? No.

Undoubtedly.

If you would have told me 70-odd days ago that we would be getting a coach coming of a BCS bowl game, who lead his team to the only undefeated regular season in the country, and he molded his qb into a Hesiman finalist..... I would have slapped you.

But yes, I would have said I can wait more than two months for that.

Ding! no way to tell just at this moment, the proof will be in the wins and losses column down the road.

It's better to hire a good coach late, than a bad coach early. However, it's impossible to compare this result to what the result might have been if we had hired a good coach months ago. Jones has to hit the recruiting trail with little time left. It will take a few years of recruiting and players learning the new system to truly tell how good a hire this was.

By the way Greg, this is Jon Embree. Send me a PM on here if you want to check out a basketball game, I'll get you tickets.

Prof. X didn't realize that this was you with a new screen name! I thought you had disappeared after mustangmaniacs went down the tube! BTW I agree wholeheartedly with your post. This hire is tsta (too soon to assess), but I am glad we got a coach with experience winning games.

We'll know a lot in 3 weeks if there are any kids signed this year who have less than stellar academic records...well, that's an assessment of the model not the coach but probably as important if not more
