We were probably going to get to play LSU in the Liberty Bowl that year. Scary.

I predict that this will one day go down as one of the Top Ten Urban Myths since so many of you keep this false myth alive.

I think I've heard about four different bowls now that wanted us at 6-5. Independence, Liberty, Sun, and GMAC. Pretty soon, we'll be talking about that Sugar Bowl bid that we lost.

Stallion, can you elaborate on the "urban myth" thing? I was a student at the time, and thought I remembered the papers saying that a win would make a bowl a pretty high probability.

There was a lot of talk about the Independence Bowl.

yes there was talk and SMU was one schools that was getting Independence Bowl consideration...but all that was gone once Notre Dame became available. Even had we beaten TCU and finished 7-4, there was not going to be a bowl bid that year.

It was my understanding from the COACHES that a win sent us to the Blue Field Bowl in Boise and that Copeland said we would lose money doing that and likely would not have gone to ANY bowl.

I was at that TCU game with my TCU girfriend at the time. I remember that we had all of our RBs injured and were playing two fullbacks in the backfield -- typical SMU luck.
That game was my first introduction to that annoying TCU touchdown horn... was a depressing night for someone who went to SMU/SMU Law for 7 years and saw that unfortunate ending to Ramon Flanigan's career.

For whatever it is worth, and irregardless of what you think of the man as a coach he was an honest human being, Coach Cavan told the team the week before the TCU game that he had been guaranteed a bowl bid (though he did not say which one) if we won that game. Eh, mute point now.
