lets say we have finally fixed admissions and transfer issues. Lets say Jones really is a genius offensive coach. And what if we catch lightning in a bottle in few years and run the table in CUSA and crash a BCS bowl like Hawaii did? Meanwhile, the Frogs missed their window and are left home to watch.

Its time to dream big and thats a whopper I admit. Although its not that far fetched because look at what Tulsa is doing lately. Its time to turn things around in a real way and it was a different feeling watching that press conference today. Jones is gonna be a tough hombre.

If he can take Hawaii to a BCS game, he can do it here. No reason why he can't.
Back off Warchild seriously.

only if things have truly changed and Jones can cast the wide net that he is used to casting.

And as a person who lives too close to Froggie High, I pray it comes to fruition.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It would be awesome to beat the Frogs to a BCS Bowl game. They had their chance in 2000 with LT when they lost to San Jose State and again in 2005 when they lost to us! Despite their 10 year run of excellence, they haven't been able to crack the BCS. It would really be awesome to turn this thing around and make it to a BCS bowl in 4/5 seasons. Like I said in another post the goal at SMU every season should be much like the goal at USC, to win the conference and play in the Liberty Bowl. Anything beyond that is gravy! If we win C-USA and our bowl game we should be able to consistently rank in the top 25! If the model is fixed as we are being told, there is no reason that can't happen at SMU.

that wasn't really very positive, it was my weakness for revenge and dislike for the cross town purple whipping boys coming out.

He couldn't cast a wide net at Hawaii. Haven't you been paying attention? They got very few players that were above a 2- or 3- star rating at UH because no one wants to send their kids that far away and they had no recruiting budget. He won with the same level of talent we have at SMU.

Being dumb/less educated/or a jailbird does not make you a better football player. Being able to recruit those kids just increases the talent pool available to you--and dramatically so. (Which we should absolutely allow to happen!) However, Jones is considered one of the top coaches in college football because he was able to win with limited talent and limited resources.

He said in the press conference that the best players he had coached were the kids they picked up after signing day that never got picked up by anyone. He knows how to develop RAW TALENT.

No complaint on changing the model on my part, but this guy has the ability to win without that. The biggest challenge will be getting the players on board. I was never sure if they had such little interest because we sucked or if we sucked because they had such little interest. (Not knocking anyone, just had to be one or the other--it wasn't all coaching, but the coaches definitely never found a way to motivate the players when I was around.)

and it is fairly crazy, but I said lightning in a bottle. It would take some luck on top of a great job by JJ and a true change in admission. But unlike say Baylor where it will be virtually impossible to turn around, CUSA, WAC and MWC it can be done.

I feel you Hoop. I am ecstatic about the development today, but I still can't put my jaded SMU view aside just yet considering 24 hours ago SMU (through no fault of their own it seems) was close to blowing another golden opportunity.

I will maintain the Jtstang view towards SMU athletics until JJ pulls me back to the good side. But I will keep giving to the MC (and increasing my donation), buying football and basketball season tics and attending as many games as possible from my lofty perch on the West Coast. I have to be a fan to put up with watching games through freaking All Access.

Good day 'Stangs, good day...

well, I saw a few of his Hawaii team at Ford Stadium and they had some ATHLETES. Remember Ashley Leleigh? Torched us and it wasn't his technique.

That was post my days, so I will take your word. (I think he took over UH when I was a junior? and I was in Denmark that year, and my senior year was the 3-8 year he and following then.)

In any case, that NFL experience is a gold mine for recruiting. I don't quite understand, but people wanted to play for Bill Callahan even though NU sucked. People aren't bailing on Charlie Weis. NU is losing crazy defensive recruits even though our new coach is on TV as we speak coaching the No. 3 ranked defense in the country, but they were willing to play for the guy that had the 112th ranked defense in the country because Billy C told them he could get them into the NFL.

Long rant, but point is--JJ can bring in some ATHLETES, especially with a recruiting budget and being on the mainland where parents would send their kids.

I'm 100% with all model changes. No complaint on that from me. I just think the exciting thing about this guy is that he can do it without it and with any and all model changes, who knows what he can do!

(I'm drunk and excited if you didn't get that! And my boy Bo Pelini is having a night!!!!!! Great end to a crappy football season for me!!!!! Get me antoher Purple Hippo!)

Ha! Not very well anymore. I went back a couple of years ago, and realized I must not have actually learned that much in the first place!

My signature phrase I remember though is:

Na! Ve sees i morn. Hej Hej! (Add Danish lettering in your mind as appropriate)

--also--

Ja ve gern he un ol! (also imagine danish letters)
