Link?

I didn't see anything that said that over there. Just fan support/speculation.

I thought all the assistants said they haven't been contacted by anyone and have no idea who is even in charge--of the team or the department? Plus, I didn't think they could offer anyone for 10 days anyway, per Hawaii law.

Still a lot of talk about Tomey too:

Tomey On Hawai'i Wish List
San Jose State coach could return to island for dual role

A source close to the University of Hawai'i search has confirmed that [deleted] Tomey, the former Warrior coach and current San Jose State coach, is on Hawai'i's wish list as possibly the top candidate to return to the island and replace June Jones.

Tomey could return in a dual coach/athletic director position but has not commented on media speculation.

Tomey-to-Hawaii rumors intensify
SJSU coach potential candidate as A.D.

[deleted] Tomey was considered the savior of University of Hawaii football nearly 30 years ago. Now there is an increasing buzz on the Islands that the San Jose State coach is the best man to play that role again.

Tomey's name surfaced over the weekend as a potential candidate to replace Coach June Jones, who shocked UH fans and administrators when he accepted a five-year, $10 million deal from Southern Methodist University. The Tomey-to-Hawaii rumors intensified Tuesday after school officials bought out the contract of embattled athletic director Herman Frazier and it became clear Tomey might be more of a candidate for that position.

"If there is anybody who understands and knows exactly what needs to be done, it's Coach Tomey," said former Hawaii quarterback Blane Gaison, who played for Tomey in the early '80s and is now a high school athletic administrator near Honolulu. "Most of the people here consider him one of ours.

"The June situation was devastating. But to have Coach Tomey's name out there, knowing there is a great possibility to get him back here, excites a lot of people."

Tomey did not return phone messages left by the Mercury News for the second day.

As of Tuesday night, Hawaii officials had not asked SJSU for permission to speak with Tomey. But all signs point to the 69-year-old Tomey being included in discussions for one or both of the positions.

A few days before Jones accepted the SMU offer, he sent an e-mail to Frazier that included a list of five possible successors: Tomey, Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, Texas assistant coach Duane Akina, New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and Hawaii linebackers coach Cal Lee.
Jones wrote, "I have talked to them and they are interested."

Tomey is credited with putting the Hawaii program on the map during his 10-year stint (1977-86), and he still has strong ties to the community. He and his wife, Nanci, own a home near Honolulu.

This is the second time in two years that Tomey has been linked to a job opening. Last winter, he quickly and strongly dismissed a report naming him as a possible candidate for the Stanford coaching job.

Not surprisingly, Tomey's status has been a hot topic among followers of both San Jose State and Hawaii.

SJSU's fan site, SpartanThunder.com, issued a request for its members to call Athletic Director Tom Bowen's office to show their support for Tomey. One string on the site includes personal messages from more than a dozen fans, most pleading with Tomey to remain at SJSU.

Honolulu Advertiser columnist Ferd Lewis on Tuesday suggested that Tomey would be a perfect fit for both the coaching and A.D. positions because of the "kind of leadership and experience Tomey could provide in a pinch." Reader response to the column was overwhelmingly in support of making Tomey the A.D.

"The people of Hawaii hold Coach Tomey in the highest regard; they always have," Gaison said. "The possibility of getting him back here in either capacity would bring a tremendous excitement and joy to the people here."

Tomey is a great guy & solid coach, but he is a little "long in the tooth" to make a change.

That said, Hawaii beats SJSU by a long shot.
