Hawaii & SMU Fans Unite!

I'm amazed! You guys know every single detail about the Hawaii Warriors! From our sub-par facilities, to our former lazy AD, and even what JJ wore when he flew back to Hawaii! Someone even knew what he had for dinner the other day! But with all that knowledge about Hawaii what impresses me most is how SMU fans conduct themselves. Not one time did I see a negative comment regarding Hawaii, instead I see a lot of positives, well-wishes and good lucks - For that, SMU has my respect, and gained a new fan. SMU fans know how it's like to be dissapointed, and like Hawaii fans we always hope for the best. I know I'm speaking for myself, but believe me when I tell you that there's a lot of people in Hawaii now cheering for SMU, and on behalf of them I thank you all for showing so much class and making us feel welcome here.

Go SMU!

As I have been following June's career since 1984 it is only fitting that I follow him wherever he goes. I remember my initial shock in 1999 when he signed with Hawaii... I figured I'd never see, or hear, from him again.

I have been blessed with DirecTV, who for years would show almost all Hawaii games on one of the Fox Sports West stations. It meant staying up till 3 in the morning, but it was always worth it.

When the rumors were flying about JJ going to SMU all I could think was; WHY? That team hasn't done a thing since... since... since... heck, I couldn't remember them ever doing anything.

Then I found this board and have been blown away by the folks here. Very friendly fans who have a passion for their team. When June left the Chargers for Hawaii... that was easy... I never did, or have, cared for the lightning bolts. But Hawaii took hold of my heart. I don't know that I have ever cared for a sports team more. They were the perennial underdog. You couldn't help but pull for them. Seeing how quickly and effectively they picked up the Run & Shoot and seeing all the NCAA passing records fall by the wayside made the ride even more enjoyable.

The past two years, with Colt, Jason Rivers, Ryan Grice-Mullen and Davone Bess have been truly special. That all four of them will be turning pro, and in all likelihood will end up on different teams really brings an amazing run to an end. You can't imagine my sadness with the way the Sugar Bowl turned out. I wanted so badly for them to win...

SMU is another chapter in JJ's long and storied career. If this program can be turned around, he's the one who can do it. Seeing the passion for their Mustangs here, I can hardly wait for them to see how good their team will be.

Someone asked recently how quickly the team would pick up JJ's offense... well, in 1999, Hawaii was coming off 18 straight losses and ranked 118th out of 118 teams in offense in 1998. In 1999 they ranked # 2 and went 9-4.

It wouldn't be right for me to say I am a Mustang fan... there's been nothing to sway my emotions as of yet. But their fans here have really impressed me and won me over. Once I see June on the sideline and see the Mustang's moving up and down the field with ease as all the SMU passing records fall... it will get easier.

My heart still is with Hawaii... and will always be there. But my heart is also pretty big... I think I can find room for a pony in there!

Based on what I have seen from the fanbase here... of all the college teams in Div 1, I don't think JJ could have picked a better place to go.

We will be pulling for Hawaii to keep the momentum going. As bad as it sounds, June Jones leaving may have helped your athletic department. Getting rid of a bad AD and bringing attention to the needs of the program. Jones coming to SMU will work to make both programs better in different ways.

Homewrecker and Dr. Death,

Your good wishes are more than appreciated, they are admired. Best of luck to the Warriors. Win the WAC again! Hope you get a Head Coach, who will continue the long success you have created for the last nine years.

Dr Death and other Hawai'i (and June Jones) fans: Please make arrangements to come to a game in Dallas this year. I'll put some of you up at my modest home and treat you to some Texas Bar-B-Q.

And you all can invite Ponyfans to Hawai'i for a game.

Sounds like a fair trade.

I'm being pretty serious here.

We need SMU vs Hawaii in a BCS bowl in 5 years. The press would be unimaginable.

Thank you - Homewrecker

In many way, as for facilities several years back, we had more in common than anyone could fathom. You could probably say the same for administration, too.

Thx again for your nice compliment.
