Spring often allows teams to experiment with different things. At the spring game, these experiments are viewed by all including potential opponents.
By closing practice, teams can either include or exclude experiments and not allow potential opponents to know what is kept and what is discarded. So opponents have to be prepared for all manner of possibilities.
Also, the public does not view injuries and the exact nature. An official statement about an injury is one thing; having an eyewitness to the injury so that one may quantify the injury is another thing.
Also new players are protected from public scrutiny while they try to learn a new system. Public discussion about a player not looking good in practice and then the speculation is nipped in the bud. This allows for a player to develop within the system and not be exposed to pressure or criticism from outside the system.

Our players and coaches certainly face much less scrutiny than those at the University of Texas which opens their practices to the public. In fact, UT probably has more people watch their practices and scrimmages than we have at most games.

I think the main reason for the closed practices is to limit the amount of distractions for the players so that they will remain focused during the practices.

Most of what snob has posted on this board hasn't bothered me, BUT he or she saying "our" when referring to SMU players and coaches, now that pisses me off!
