UH's OL and special teams coach Dennis McKnight (he played 10 years in the NFL) is going to join JJ's staff at SMU.

Dennis McKnight told me tonight he’ll be on the plane to Dallas with Dan Morrison and Wes Suan tomorrow, joining the SMU coaching staff with June Jones.

He has very mixed feelings about it, and is going to miss his players and the fans.

If you want to learn more about McKnight, here is one of the many articles that gives some detail.

For what its worth, he gave easily the most compelling performance in the "June Jones and the Magic Temple of Doom" series.

The Blog refused to ask the question of JJ during the press conference "Do you run the swinging gate on all extra point attempts?"

Interesting. I looked him up on databasefootball.com and apparently he was born here in Dallas. Wonder if he still has family here.

JJ *never* used the swinging gate as a head coach at Hawaii or San Diego.

That's kind of an inside joke, newbie. You'll pick up on it as you go along.

Really that's the most important thing in all of this. If he can act, he's gotta be a good coach.

I'm excited! In that video, he reminded me of every classic assistant coach I've ever had. Of course, that says nothing about his coaching or recruiting ability, but he just looks like the part of the coach that can get the players motivated.

FWIW, looks like his family moved from Dallas years ago, and he went to high school in NY. (Although, I guess he could have extended family in town still.) Since then, his football career has taken him all over the country (college in Iowa, NFL in San Diego, Detroit, Philly--and obviously coached in San Diego and Hawaii.)

I really hadn't focused on the fact that McKnight spent 11 years in the NFL.

McKnight spent 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), including eight with the San Diego Chargers, two with the Detroit Lions and one with the Philadelphia Eagles
