Phil Bennett is one of 4 finalist that will interview for Marshall's vacant D- Co-ordinator job.
I was wanting SMU fans impressions of Bennett.......

Can't recruit, can't adjust schemes to fit less-talented teams.

Was very successful at Kansas State as D - Coordinator. It's what got him hired at SMU. But true, recruiting here not so good.

My feeling was always that he is just one of those guys that makes a great assistant, but not head coaching material. He did a great job at K-State, but like many others, couldn't make the transition to a HC job.

I think he'd be a good pick. His recruiting here wasn't that good, but it's hard to know how much of that was his fault. I think his experience as a head coach will make him a better assistant than he was at K-state.

didn't recruit well? or the school had barriers in place that prevented him from recruiting to his best ability... he was the man who recruited Tnewman to Kstate, so that blows the "he can't recruit bull ****" that is constantly thrown around this board. If Kstate can let in the thugs it does, and marshall can get Randy Moss in, then PB will have no problem recruiting... PB would be a huge hire as your DC, if he is good enough to coach in the SEC and through out the Big 12 and excel, he will do well at Marshall.

Here's what Bennett done before arriving at SMU......
Nominated as National Assistant Coach of the Year in 1999
Named American Football Quarterly Defensive Coordinator of the Year in 1995
2001 - K-State DC, #3 Total Defense Nationally
2000 - K-State DC, #4 Total Defense Nationally
1999 - K-State DC, #2 Total Defense Nationally
1998 - OU Secondary and Recruiting COor
1995 - Texas A&M DC, Aggies ranked in the national top 10 in every major defensive category, including third in total defense and scoring defense and second in pass efficiency defense
1994 - LSU DC, led the SEC in every major defensive category and finished eighth in the nation in total defense
I agree that there are some people that are career asst. and I think Bennett is one of them. Recruiting wouldn't be a big problem if he were hired. Marshall's O-/D- Coordinator's do very little recruiting.
Rick Minter, Cincy's former coach is also interviewing.

He actually can recruit, despite what people will tell you. Phil is a good salesman. He just had nothing to recruit with here because ultimately he isn't cut out to be a head coach and he had nothing to sell. Bennett was completely overwhelmed by the job of head coach.
I would love nothing better than to have him all the way in Marshall. It is never a place I thought he would be. The farther away from Texas the better.

Just think in two years...
We get JJ vs ARt Briles in Dallas.
And just maybe the return of PB (where's the Kool-Aid) vs JJ's offense.
It can't get any better...could it?

"WE...ARE...MARSHALL"
I think Phil would enjoy being at a university where they loudly proclaim things...good fit for his defense

He seems to have had a lot of bad luck here.....lost games in some strange ways....including his last game
