When was the last season that SMU had at least a .500 record for in its first 4 games to start a season? Has anybody heard if OSU fans have been buying tickets for the game on 9/20?

That would be 1996. 2-2.

Like the Wolfe brand chili comercial says, "1996? Well, partner, that's too long."

It certainly helped that we opened with Tulsa at home (in front of a whopping 12,177 fans) in '96, but technically that game was in August, so we beat only Arkansas in Sept that year (losses to Utah, Navy & BYU).

Arkansas was our only Sept win the following year, when we lost to Ole Miss, Navy & BYU again.

Since then, out ONLY Sept win was 9-2-2000 against Kansas to open Ford Stadium.

You actually have to go back to 1992 when our senior laden team beat UNT, New Mexico & TCU in Sept and only lost to Tulane when a last second FG attempt was wide left (as I recall). That '92 season was memorable because it included a Homecoming win (41-16)over Houston (those seniors were frosh on the short end of that 95-21 game)and those guys closed their careers by beating Arkansas 24-19 in Little Rock

And yes, I'm enjoying looking at my media guide today.

That Houston win in '92 was probably the best I've felt as a Mustang Football fan at any home game since the DP. Lots of pride and smiles were in Ownby that day!

1996
Beat Tulsa at home
Beat the Hogs in Arkansas

Lost on the last play of the game to Utah when Ramon overthrew an open receiver in the endzone from the 6 yard line

Lost on the last play of the game to Navy when the Mids kicked a 40+ yard FG as time expired.

We would later lose on the last play of the game on a missed 35 yard FG to Missouri, and finish the year 5-6 with 3 losses on the last play of the game... it was also the 6 wins or else year for Rossley... Poor guy would not have been fired had just one of those games gone our way.

Here's to the 1992 team and what they meant to the post DP ponies. I,too, loved that season as much as any since 1982. The 1996 team was still competitive, unlike much of anything since then. If the coaches then had the admission process now, there is no telling what else they might have done.

Agreed - I'm proud of all the SMU teams, but that 1992 team sure showed a lot of heart.

There's some discussion on The Hilltop of 'honoring' the '92 team at one of this year's home games.
