Copeland as possible Baylor AD?Any thoughts to if Jim Copeland might get some consideration to be the new AD at Baylor?

Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?No way - he's sunk too much work and energy into SMU to leave for another school where he'd have to overhaul the whole athletic department. If he leaves SMU, it would be for a big-time program with a strong athletic department and a good national image (and a nice budget, of course). I bet he wouldn't leave except to take over an AD job in the ACC. If Virginia were to call, he'd take it in a minute, and he might at some place like UNC or Duke, too. But I can't see him going to Baylor.
But did everyone see the note in the DMN the other day that mentioned Coach Dement as a possible successor to Bliss in Waco? [This message has been edited by Dement-ed (edited 08-10-2003).] HOORAY, BEER!
Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?What the ****, Snob? SHUT UP.
Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?CPC has to disagree, Dement-ed. Copeland has applied for every open job thats come up in the last few years wether its in the ACC or out (Kansas), big schoool (Tennessee), or small (Richmond). There isnt anything tying him down at SMU, he'll be a candidate for the Baylor job, and if its offered, he'll take it.
Some will tell you that a glass is half empty, and others that the same glass is half full. But all CPC really wants to know is...... does the drink taste good?
Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?Actually, I don't know how true that is. My understanding is that Kansas approached him, not vice versa. He certainly listened, but then withdrew his name from consideration. Don't know about the Tennessee job. I think you're right, however, in the fact that he did apply at Richmond. At least that's the way I heard it.
I still don't think he'd take the Baylor job, unless the financial compensation was simply too great to turn down. And I think Baylor has many other areas on which to spend its resources, and I'm not sure he's made SMU enough of a national presence (wink, wink) in either football or men's basketball to warrant a massive contract elsewhere. Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?Are you guys serious? Copeland wanted the Richmond job and they didnt hire him? Thats surprising given his Virginia background. But they dont even have D-1 football at Richmond. Can't see them paying him as much as SMU can/does.
Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?Indeed, salary was probably his sticking point. Copeland is a Virginia man, he did a great job at UVA, and has many ties in the Old Dominion. If he could get back there someday, I wouldn't be surprised to see him take somebody up in the future. I hope no time soon, because I think we are lucky to have him at SMU. But yeah, I don't see him going to Baylor.
Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?Right you are, KnuckleStang - we are lucky to have Cope. Don't know how many other ADs could have landed the funding for a stadium as nice as Ford, or gotten us a coach like Coach Bennett.
Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?i would not think he would go down there but we would be better if he did.
Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?Please tell me you're kidding. Without Copeland, there is no Ford Stadium. Without Copeland, SMU never lands the first two (of the originally proposed three) soccer Final Fours. Without Copeland, SMU is nowhere near Title IX compliance with the addition of volleyball, crew and now equestrian. Without Copeland, Phil Bennett (and his staff) are earning rave reviews for their recruiting prowess and coaching pedigree at another school.
We need to keep Copeland. Fountain of youth

Re: Copeland as possible Baylor AD?The only job that Copeland EVER actually threw his name out for was the SEC commish job. Copeland will at least stick around to see the resurgance of SMU football. And if he goes anywhere, it will be an AD job at a BCS school.

Does not Baylor qualify as a BCS school... Just kidding. I agree that he would only go to a thriving BCS program if he were to leave. You should not have anything to worry about it Baylor.
