From the article: "The rebuilding of the SMU football program will have a little Utah flavor in it."
Thank God - that's what we've been missing all this time!

Note he recruits Houston for Utah and they've been relatively successful in South Texas. I know their QB Brian Johnson is from Baytown

Sounds great.
Obviously an area we need a tremendous amount of improvement in.
Hopefully he will get a chance to coach the 2 DB's out of the Houston area that have committed to Hawaii.

Great to have him come aboard. Having a coaching coming from a non BCS school like Utah which has two 4 star recruits, nine 3 star recruits so far, and is ranked ahead of several BCS schools in recruiting is great!

So our team is going to be full of Polynesians and Mormons? Granted there are a lot of Polynesians who also happen to be Mormon.

Pretty good sign, when we can get a guy to leave his alma mater, and a program like Utah.
I was told today, that all but one of the coaching spots have been filled. That was early this morning, so JJ's staff may be complete by now. There is a new day breaking on the Hilltop!

Looks like an excellent hire. Looks like he can take players and make them better:
--In his first two years coaching the Ute safeties, Derrick Odum turned a pair of one-time walk-ons into all-conference caliber players.
--Odum also played a role in the emergence of one of the greatest defensive players in Utah football history in 2005, when Eric Weddle manned a safety position for the first eight games of the season before moving to corner, where help was needed. Weddle, a 2006 Consensus All-American and two-time MWC Defensive Player of the Year, became a second-round NFL draft pick of the San Diego Chargers.
Odum also assists with the kick returners and the punt team - the latter which ranked No. 1 in the nation in net punting in 2006

Weddle's a monster in the secondary for the Chargers. He came in as a rookie and really fixed a position that had been crap on that team since the departure of Hot-Rod.

I'm wondering if we've had the raw talent all along but the previous coaches simply didn't know how to turn raw talent into good football players. One thing's for sure, things are looking up, and I am chomping at the bit to see the JJ version of SMU in the spring game!
