Would it make SMU/JJ look more impressive for JJ to have success where an NFL positional coach (Bennett) could not?

Dunno about that. NFL has had assistants who flopped as head coaches on the collegiate level but have been solid at the pro level as a positional coach. Joe Avezzano is one that comes to mind.

And with Coach Joe, he had success as an Arena League coach, too!

I think its more from a standpoint of if PB is recruiting against us in our state he can say what a rinky dink program SMU is and tell them all his horror stories from his time here. If he were to take smear SMU approach to recruiting, even in a backhanded compliment sort of way, it could negatively impact us. If he goes NFL, we have nothing to worry about.

I could see PB landing the secondary coach job with the Cowboys. How many times did we have it shoved down our throat that he coached Terence Newman in college?

Come on. Phil has too much class for that.

Are you a close personal friend of his, or are you basing that opinion on the public media persona of Bennett?

Well, JJ was a head coach in the NFL without much success, so I'm not sure success at the collegiate level would draw many accolades by itself. Turning around another program, now that's a different story.

Your grandma could have coached Terence Newman in college - players with that much talent make a "coach" look pretty good.

Phil, or any coach for that matter, would absolutely reflect on their experience at a previous coaching stop when recruiting a player. Say PB coaches at Baylor or SMU you don't think recruits would here things like "Well SMU is a great place to go play ball if you don't care about playing big time opponents in sold out stadiums but here at ___ you play the big boys every week and will be on tv all the time. SMU has FANTASTIC facilities, for a small program, but really cannot compete with the facilities we have here at ____. It will be really tough for them to bring in top players bc their recent history has been so poor. Did you know that a couple of seasons ago they didn't even win a game???" Okay, so I started joking around a bit there, but you get the point. It is in our best interest for Bennett to coach in a land or league far, far away if you ask me. In the end will it have a big impact? No. Could it affect the mind of even 1 recruit? Absolutely.
In his defense, he might just be using a little sarcasm.

Seriously? No I'm not a close personal friend. But I did get to meet him several times during his tenure. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone (close personal friend, or not) who would question his class and integrity.
Do you really think that's the way he recruits, by trashing other programs? (No I have never been personally recruited by him.)
