Somebody at the Mustangmanaics.com board with a UTEP handle says Tim Hundley has been hired as LB coach. Odd because he is the DC at UTEP. Former DC of Univ. of Washington and Oregon State.

Interesting note: He was an Washington Assistant under Neuheisel. He received a letter of reprimand for participating in the same pool that got Neuheisel canned.

If true, I wonder if JJ has enough funds to pay a linebacker coach more than a DC at UTEP?

I wonder if maybe JJ hired the guy to do the same duties he had at UTEP, D-cordinator and Linebackers coach.

Interesting that at some point in 2005, Hundley was hired to be Secondary coach at Michigan State and then backed out. Appears to have a good reputation. No clue on what kind of recruiter he is.

Hmm, back out or got a better offer?

Hundley had been the DC at UTEP for one season (Price's first season at UTEP) when he was offered the job at Michigan St. He accepted it, then Mike Price talked him into staying at UTEP. Unfortunately, that first season was his most successful season at UTEP.

He has been unable to recruit the type of player he needs for his style of defense at UTEP. (There has been talk that Price focuses too much on offensive recruiting, leaving the D at a disadvantage). There had already been a report on a local news station that Hundley was fired at the end of the season, but he denied it, and Price said that it would be discussed "after the holidays."

Well the holidays have come and gone, and Price has been very silent. The rumor was that Hundley and the OL coach (Livingston) were fired. The OL had a great year this year, after a horrible year last year- so that rumor is a head scratcher.

Anyway nothing has been confirmed. In fact, I came over here to see if you guys had news about Hundley. He's obviously a good coach when he has the talent to fit his system.

The UTEP defense is the worse I've ever seen. Even worse than SMU IMHO. The lack of effort in tackling & players out of position most of the games makes me think that their DC blew off the basics. It was absolute luck that UTEP won the game here. "Style" of defense? Go for the man with the ball, and at least make an attempt to tackle.
I'm very concerned

There's an El Paso Times article the guy on the Rivals board has linked to. I would link to it here, but it keeps killing my internet connection, so follow that link at your own risk.

Definitely sounds like this guy is on the way out at UTEP as defensive coordinator. That doesn't mean he wouldn't make a fine addition as a position coach.

C-USA is pretty well represented on this list. Must just because we have teams with such potent offenses.

UTEP defensive coordinator Hundley headed to SMU
By Bret Bloomquist / El Paso Times
Article Launched: 01/24/2008 06:30:58 PM MST

UTEP defensive coordinator Jim Hundley is headed to SMU to be a defensive assistant, according to several sources.

Coach Mike Price and UTEP sports information director Jeff Darby declined to comment, and SMU hasn't yet announced the hire, but according to sources close to both the UTEP and SMU programs, the announcement will be a formality and is coming in the next few days.

The Miner defense finished 117th out of 119 Division I-A programs. UTEP gave up 34 or more points in its last eight games.

Hundley could not be reached for comment.

SMU hired June Jones from Hawaii on Jan. 7 to head its program after firing Phil Bennett.

If this is true, this hire seems to be a head-scratcher to me.
