Musing on the Circle of Champions

Postby mrydel » Tue Jan 29, 2008 12:49 pm

I know that we have all said how appreciative we are for those that donated so much to allow SMU to hire a coaching staff that will hopefully move us out of the cellar and back to relativity, but I was thinking about these donors again last night.

If, by some unknown means, SMU as an institution had come up with this money, there are ways that the costs could have been lessened somewhat even if not recovered, by raising ticket prices, selling more tickets, more concession income, etc. All of these things are even happening as we speak. But, and correct me if I am wrong, there will be no monetary recovery of funds by the Circle of Champions. They gave this money, not only with the knowledge of the risk of future success, but with the knowledge that it was all a gift and in no way recoverable. This just astounds me as to the generosity and makes me wish I could do more for my school than I am able. Sure there are tax benefits, but most people successful in the business world when they invest in a project do so with the intention of a monetary return on their investment. This has been done with the hope of a feeling of pride as the primary return.

Just some thoughts that lead me to again thank these people for their tremendous donation to our mutual love.

I am very, very grateful for the generous donations by all the donors in the Circle of Champions. But, mrydel please do not feel like you do not do enough in comparison. Remember that all things in life are relative and I am sure you do your fair share for SMU.

Just to put into perspective, Gerald J. Ford is worth $1.6 BILLION. Every $500,000 he donates is approximately .03% of his net worth. For example, that equates to a $313 donation for an individual with a net worth of $1 million.

So if I am worth less than a million and give more than $313, I am giving more than Ford!

Perhaps we can convince the circle to donate 6 or 7 swiffer duster mops to Moody now. I love watching the kids drag towels around under their size 1 shoes.
