Does anyone know what Justin Smart's football eligibility is at present. I know he enrolled at SMU in January 2006 but did not begin to play until the 2007 season. I do not believe he signed a LOI until April 2006. He was listed as a non-RS freshman on the roster in 2007. Does he have 3 years of playing eligibility left? He seems a perfect fit for JJ's defense.

How do we know what perfect fit for JJ's defense is . . . we do not even have a DC! unless you are saying the DC will just be a figure head and that JJ will run the D!?

Sports, and all that implies.

Coach Jones will run the offense, not the defense.

I agree.
Also, didn't JJ say that we would have a DC by today? Has anyone heard anything?

He said two more hires (including DC) by the end of the weekend at the signing day event...Oh, and also said we would all be very happy...

Because of the hires, or just in general?

I'll say what I know, which isn't much, and then I will throw in an opinion.
I had a short visit with Justin Christmas Eve, and when it became clear that Jones was the target, I spoke w/ his "second family" on the subject (he was going or had gone back up to the Hilltop). He was certainly interested in who the hire would be, and he seemed pretty amiable to remaining at SMU under whoever's tutelage.
IMHO, given that Jones spoke considerably about "motor" in his recruits, especially the defensive recruits, I think that he values that as a trait. Smart is known for his "high motor", both by coaches as well as other players...Cory Muse even commented on it.
I believe that Justin will play where he is told; he is a team player and uber-coachable. However, were it that he was given his preference in the matter, I think he would choose to move back to OLB or even MLB. He is lean by nature, and I think that as a defensive end, he is going to struggle unnecessarily against much larger O-lineman.
The kid has a big heart, is uber-respectful, and is pretty focused on what he is doing in school there as well as football. And that is exactly what I hoped for him when he committed.

That's almost "uber" abuse.

And that was being an uber smart-arse.... (that's a compliment, by the way).
I kind of thought that Justin would be better suited at linebacker, so interesting to see your comments. I think he could make more of a difference there.

As of Friday, no hire has been made.
Reportedly it's coming soon (I know, we've heard that before.)
