June Jones has made his first BIG MISTAKE by ignoring assistant coaches with strong Texas roots and Texas high school recruiting connections.

All those bins full of DVDs and tapes that the coaches were getting on a DAILY basis from kids who wanted to play for him must have really gotten in the way of him digging up RC Slocum or Grant Teaff.

As much as I hope you are wrong I can't say I disagree. I have no doubt that he will eventually build fruitful and strong relationships in Texas, but adding locals to the staff would make the transition that much easier.

Adding coaches who win will make HS coaches do some of the work because they'll want to send their kids to play for us.

Isn't coach Tim Hundley from UTEP? I imagine he has some good Texas recruitng relationships.

Why are we looking for mistakes when we haven't had a chance to win or lose a game yet.
Hold your judgement until the season starts at the very least. June is being paid the big bucks to complete a tough task and he's done it before. Lets see if he can do it again.
IMO June will lead this program to a successful turnaround. The answers will come on the field. He signed a few Texans this year(with little turnaround time) who likely wouldn't have signed with Bennett and he has extensive Texan ties. Taylor, Banjo, Mitchell, Loftin.

Has his entire staff been announced? I don't think so.

How did those local boys from the last regime work out for us?

I agree with Stallion. Needed at least two with great recruiting connections. Perhaps a couple of the Hawaii guys have them. I dunno.
We'll see.
I do find appealing, however impractical, the draw of kids from out of state. SMU is only a little less than half Texans, and about 70% from sunbelt/Southern states, right? Look at the roster, and it is nowhere as representative of the general student population. Ergo, one could surmise that casting a wider net is not only appropriate, but expected.
But then again, everybody knows the best players come from Texas.

I wasn't talking about players when I said "local boys", I was talking about coaches. I should have been more clear.

If you got local ties and can't recruit, you still can't recruit.
If you don't have local ties and can recruit, you can still recruit, it just takes time to build the relationships.
I you have local ties and can recruit but can't coach, it really isn't going to matter either way, but your ability to recruit is going to be limited because you have nothing to sell kids on.
