Good to see we're on the front page of Rivals.
"Jones' arrival has prompted much more than warm greetings. Orsini said the season-ticket renewal process will be moved up a month because there has been so much response, and he said several local businesses have called to express interest in sponsorships; TV and radio stations also have initiated conversations." I love getting this kind of attention. "But Todd Baty, a senior history major from Dallas who writes for a campus newspaper called Hilltopics, wasn't as enthusiastic. "I think he's overpaid," he said. "Two million dollars a year can be spent a lot better ways. I have nothing against football or June Jones as an individual, and he seems like a great football coach. But I feel $2 million is a lot of money that can be spent in more meaningful ways on this campus." "People will come out of the woodwork if athletics needs money, but the university honors program needs more money and is still underfunded." Boo!
The amount of publicity that SMU football has received since hiring JJ is surprising. I think alot of folks not associated with the school will become fans of the program. They know that while we deserved what we got twenty years ago, there were a number of programs that went untouched--SMU was singled out. They want us to come back. I think the amount of publicity we will be receiving if we do go to a bowl or have a nine win season in two or three years will surprise us even more.
You are correct. There is a "silent majority" of SMU fans out there. /No Hate. Just Facts. Occasional sarcasm.
Great article. I wish it would have been published during the recruiting season. We just might have received more and better committments.
BTW, is it possible that Todd Baty is a student assistant in the Spanish dept.?
I think this part alone should make everyone feel better:
Quick reversals of fortune aren't uncommon in Conference USA. UCF posted 10 victories this past season, just four seasons after going winless. Houston, which was winless in 2001, has made three consecutive bowl appearances. Tulsa, which went 1-11 in 2002, also has made three bowl appearances in a row and won its division in Conference USA in two of the past three seasons.
I liked the blurb on Willis. I had been afraid that Jones was actually more than contemplating starting a true freshman. I don't mind that he wants to have an open competition for the starting qb spot, but I know I read recently that he cut the incumbent starting qb at Hawaii when he got there - I just didn't want him to have the mindset that Willis was already at a competitive disadvantage.
I just don't like the idea of starting a true freshman..... unless he actually beats out the incumbent on a level playing field. I don't see that happening. But I do want Justin to be pushed as hard as possible. ..... Great pub. I love the McIllhenny quote(s). ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
He was. That's what got him in trouble in the first place. ![]() /No Hate. Just Facts. Occasional sarcasm.
Good problem too have... too many good QBs Except that they might end up at Texas State and go pro or something. Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
We can move them to tight end in someone else's offense. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
