Congratulations on a great choice for Defensive Coordinator

You hit a home run with the hiring of Tom Mason as DC IMHO! I've known Tom since he was hired at Boise State in the '90s and he's been successful in his positions at every school since that time. He was appointed as interim HC here when our coach, Pokey Allen was diagnosed with cancer. It was a tough year that season with Tom losing a close personal friend with Pokey's death. Since he left Boise he's done a good job at Nevada and Fresno State.

For those of you that have the opportunity to meet Tom you will find a very warm, real person who is a pleasure to know. He, his wife and daughter are a great addition to SMU.

Good Luck next season to the Mustangs

Good to know someone thinks highly of him. I just hope he does good enough to make the other teams score less. I'm not looking for shutouts here.

Yes you are. You want to see bone-crushing hits and stifling defenses that break the will of their opponents in the first series of the game. You want to see 40+ points on offense to a defense that doesn't allow a touchdown.

You gotta want it. To hell with the kool-aid, but we still have to want it.

You're absolutely right. Remember that game vs Ok State here when the Woods kids set all the records? None of those TDs were as demoralizing as SMU's first play from scrimmage. IIRC, Ok State had just had a long drive for a TD, we finally get on the field, and promptly through a pick...I don't think it was returned for a TD, but it was deep in our own territory. That set the tone. It was late in the 2nd quarter before we got our first first down, to which the crowd gave a sarcastic standing 'o'.

He'll be very good at recruiting because of his personality and knowledge of defenses. His defensive teams have been known for their aggressive style from the first year I knew him. One instance was when Boise State was playing the #1 team(Montana)in D-1AA. They had an All-American QB named Dave Dickinson who was a terrific passer. Mace set up a defense that blitzed like 90% of the plays. They sacked Dickinson numerous time and took them right out of the game. He is a great addition to the offensive talent of June Jones. Best of luck to the Mustangs next season.

Does he run a 3-4 or a 4-3 base defense?
